The Lab Assistant provides general support duties for the laboratory by performing inventory reviews, ordering and receiving laboratory supplies and maintaining glassware. The Lab Assistant performs general clerical duties including filing, copying, transporting patient samples and reports, mail pick-up and delivery, and other duties as assigned. Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire: N/A Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment: N/A Experience REQUIRED: Basic computer skills including word processing, spreadsheet, and email. Data entry experience. Basic office skills such as copy machine, fax machine, and business telephone. Experience PREFERRED: Experience working in a laboratory environment. Experience working with patient materials and supplies. Experience with laboratory safety procedures. Education/training REQUIRED: High School Diploma or equivalent Education/training PREFERRED: One year of post-high school education in a Health Science field. Independent action(s) required: Solves problems with direction from supervisor/manager. Complete six (6) continuing education hours per year. The Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Laboratory at VCU has an opening for a full time HLA Laboratory Assistant. The laboratory, which is part of the Hume- Lee Transplant Center, is a High Complexity Clinical Laboratory that provides services to the Solid Organ and the Bone Marrow Transplant Programs at VCU Health System. The Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Laboratory opened in 1965 as one of the first of its kind in the world and specializes in the most up-to date testing for HLA typing, antibody detection and compatibility testing. The Histocompatibility Laboratory is located in a 10,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility in the Virginia Bio-Technology Research Park. This full time HLA Laboratory Assistant position offers an opportunity to work with one of the busiest transplant programs in the nation and a dedicated clinical staff with a mission to provide the best in patient care, research and education. As a Full Time HLA Laboratory Assistant you will aid the laboratory in performing supportive tasks such as specimen receipt, accessioning and processing, resolving specimen inconsistencies, report generation and filing, clinician contact and inventory control and stocking among others. High School Diploma is required. Experience in a laboratory setting is not required but is preferred. Previous experience using various software applications (MS Office, Excel, Word, etc.) is preferred.
