Position: Community Health Worker I

Location: Cullowhee, NC

Compensation: $15-20 per hour

Organization Description: Vecinos is a non-profit, 501(c)3 Free Clinic that provides bilingual integrated primary and mental health care, mobile clinic services, health education, and case management to uninsured, low-income adults in the far-western NC counties. We offer a positive, supportive, and team-oriented atmosphere. We work in a non-traditional environment with limited resources. Schedules and hours vary throughout the year.

Purpose: The Community Health Worker (CHW) I enhances the quality of patients’ healthcare by providing supportive services. The CHW I has a focus on, and advanced knowledge of, Latino identity, language, and cultural expectations of healthcare systems.

Responsibilities

• Complete initial health assessments and patient registrations
• Complete data entry within grant database and electronic health record
• Medical interpretation at partner sites including dental, ultrasounds, and other specialist types
• Transport patients as needed from home or worksite to medical appointments at partner sites or to Vecinos clinics
• Deliver medications to patients’ homes
• Perform basic communication with patients
• Assist in preparing supplies for outreach
• Attend outreach 2-3 evenings per week

Required Qualifications

• Native, or near-native English and Spanish fluency with excellent written and oral communication skills
• Valid driver’s license and ability to drive large SUVs in a variety of settings
• Formal or informal experience interpreting in medical settings
• Highly collaborative, flexible, and dynamic nature with strong communication skills
• Willingness to work late nights and weekends and in nontraditional/non-clinical work environments across WNC
• Understanding of cultural competency and a desire to work with diverse people of all ages, without regard to sex, race, religion, or socioeconomic background

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in giving general health education
