SUMMARY/OVERVIEW

This position is responsible acquiring and implementing the skills required for the maintenance and repair of boilers and ancillary equipment in VA hospitals and other Government facilities. The Boiler Apprentice is an entry level working role responsible for maintaining steam and heating systems in large buildings and handles equipment such as low-pressure steam boilers, high-pressure steam boilers, electric steam boilers, and hot water heating systems. The Boiler Apprentice is responsible to and performs advanced task under the direct supervision of Class A and Class B Boiler Technicians. Through Apprentices are given a goal of becoming Class B Technicians within 2 years of employment. Apprentices are responsible for their personal growth and advancement by being willing to safely learn and are open to mentoring through on-the job training for the various task that may be assigned while on the job.

To be considered a Boiler Apprentice, Venergy requires the individual to have a desire to work in the boiler and burner field and have the basic comprehensive skills to perform task under direct supervision of Technicians. The Boiler Apprentice will be preparing boilers for their internal and external inspections and maintenance along with its ancillary equipment in accordance with ASME and National Board codes, Local Jurisdictions and Authorized Inspectors requirements, Original Equipment Manufactures Instructions, and all VA directives.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assisting with routine service & preventative maintenance contract work at sites throughout the nation.
  • Assist with preparing boilers for annual internal inspections by certified National Board inspectors.
  • Assist with preparing deaerators for their six-year internal NDE inspections.
  • Learn basic boiler and burner operation skills to safely work around gas fired equipment.
  • Learn basic electrical skills to safely work around electrical systems.
  • Learn basic piping skills to safely make repairs to Steam, Condensate, Fuel and Water Piping.
  • Complete mandatory OSHA safety training.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Ability to read and follow blueprints and maintenance and operation manuals.
  • Aptitude in math and strong problem-solving abilities.
  • Prior military experience preferred.
  • Travel will be required.

ADA/PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is medium to heavy demand. Must be able to move objects and use abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue. Constant movement and use of limbs; this position requires good manual dexterity, coordination, and stamina. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands, fingers, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, or crouch; talk or hear. The employee must be able to lift up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Requires good visual acuity and hearing.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Regularly works around moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat, and humidity. Noise level may be loud at times.
