Position Purpose:
Perform operations and maintenance activities at the water and wastewater treatment facilities in accordance with established procedures. Perform maintenance activities on water distribution and wastewater collection systems, including all related components and appurtenances. Employee is subject to varied work conditions in and outdoors, including noise, fumes, hazardous materials and inclement weather.
Primary Duties/Responsibilities:
- Perform manual labor as required to assist in the maintenance and repair of water distribution and wastewater collection lines, including all related components and appurtenances.
- Perform preventative maintenance on machinery and equipment in accordance with established schedule and procedures.
- Assist in the repair and replacement of water and wastewater machinery and equipment, including all related components and appurtenances.
- Account for all assigned materials, tools and equipment; perform maintenance and inspections of the same in accordance with established procedures; initiate procurement of materials and supplies as required to perform general and specific job responsibilities.
- Respond to emergency call-outs after regular working hours as required.
- Inform the Operations Superintendent and/or Project Manager of any maintenance issues; cooperate and coordinate work activities as necessary with other system personnel.
- Perform other work activities related to specific job responsibilities listed above; operate motorized vehicles and equipment.
Qualifications
Education/Experience/Background:
- High school or GED with the ability to read, write and comprehend English (operational, process, safety and quality instructions) and be able to carry out verbal and written instructions.
- Six months to two years experience in a related position with ability to comprehend specifications, blueprints and manuals.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to perform manual labor and use shovels, picks and similar hand tools and equipment used in manual labor operations.
- Ability to use building and grounds maintenance equipment.
- Ability to use power tools, acetylene torches and sand blasting equipment.
- Working skills in the plumbing or mechanical trades.
- Ability to deal effectively with the public.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment such as front loaders, back hoe and dump trucks, preferred.
- Ability to view maintenance reports and documents.
- Ability to understand complaints and deal with the public in a courteous fashion.
- Ability to read and comprehend maps and blueprints.
Required Certification/Licenses/Training:
- Hold valid Class C, PA State driver’s license preferred
- Ability to obtain valid PA Class B, with no air brake restriction, Commercial Driver’s License within 1 year of appointment to the position.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform lifting of objects weighing as much as 100 lbs.
- Ability to work on elevated and underground structures and in confined spaces as defined by OSHA.
- Ability to perform physical functions that require the full use of both hands and feet and to remain on one’s feet while working for periods as long as 5 hours.
- Ability to bend, reach and squat to perform maintenance and repair tasks.
- Ability to hear and communicate on telephone, 2-way radio and in person.
- Ability to perform manual labor.
- Ability to climb and descent from stairs and ladders as high as 100 feet.
