Job Description
The Preceptor position is unique to Vertus and a major part of what sets the school apart from others. Preceptors do not have to be certified educators, but natural leaders and mentors at heart. Preceptors must also be successful adults who can translate their steps to success to the youth of Rochester. Preceptors must demonstrate the ability to lead, inspire and care for young men. In addition to supporting students throughout the school day, Preceptors are expected to be on-call for student needs and emergencies after school hours and make sound on-the-spot judgment calls.
Responsibilities
Take full responsibility for the success of a Learning Team of 16 to 20 students, supporting them fully to develop and achieve high goals for academic, character, and career success
Lead students and their families in developing and monitoring progress on individual short- and long-term goals for academics, character, and career
Build effective, trusting relationships with students’ families and other supporters, including providing regular reports on student progress and finding solutions to barriers to student success
Teach a disciplined Seminar curriculum designed to build character, motivation, and a growth mindset; develop knowledge of the world; and enhance professional skills, literacy, and presentation skills
Be engaging, joyful, life-affirming, and have the ability to problem solve in the moment
Tutor students in academics, by assisting students and managing behaviors in learning labs, and other academic activities. Support students by integrating academic goals and learning data.
Work with families and partners to understand and address the needs of students, develop support systems and address crises and issues that inhibit student success, including creating and implementing attendance, behavior, and academic intervention plans (in collaboration with other school staff)
Contribute to the needs of students and the school in ways that draw on your unique skills and life experience relating to one of the Vertus Pillars of Relationships, Individualized Academics, Character, and Career.
Integrate character education and school values into every aspect of instruction
Contribute to the professional community, embody school culture, represent the school in the community, and work with the Vertus team to continuously improve the structures, systems, processes, and culture of the school.

Understanding of the strengths and challenges of students, their families and communities

Knowledge of community resources and the ability to engage these resources in service of students needs
Demonstrated literacy and numeracy
Proven ability to lead a team in high-stress situations and develop all team members to support the team
Active learner with a demonstrated record of effective collaboration to solve intractable problems
Demonstrated ability to accept and immediately implement critical feedback
Reliable transportation
Ability to handle the intensity and flexibility required to work in a high-performing start-up school and remain calm, collegial, organized, and reliable under pressure
Ambition to go above and beyond the requirements of the job to innovate in education and advance as an educator and a leader
College and/or Military experience preferred
School is year-round with regular breaks.
