Laundry Machine Operator

This Laundry Machine Operator position is in Environmental Management services at the VA Maine Healthcare Systems, located at the Togus, Maine location. This position is a full-time at 40 hours per week.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Work requires long periods of standing on hard surfaces and heavy physical effort in removing wet laundry by hand from washers and lifting bundles of dirty laundry from trucks, frequently weighing 35 to 50 pounds or more. Physical effort is required in pushing carts of laundry, sorting, and weighing.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in a noisy, drafty, humid and hot laundry facility subject to rapid changes in temperature during cold weather. Due to the possibility of contamination from soiled linens, employees are required to wear protective attire (Such as: gowns, mask, caps, goggles, and gloves) while handling soiled laundry. Attire can be somewhat uncomfortable and hot at times. Subject to skin irritation from chemicals. Subject to disagreeable odors and slips and falls from wet floors. Subject to needle sticks and cuts from objects in laundry.

Responsibilities:

Duties include but are not limited to:

• The major function is to supply clean linens and garments to the facilities in VISN 1 laundry services.
• The incumbent is to process soiled linens, clothing and uniforms throughout industrial type washer/extractors and produce odorless hygienically clean linens for the VA Medical Centers.
• The incumbent will separate soiled linen, balance by weight, and load 200 lb washers. The incumbent should have full knowledge of all washer settings and usage of proper setting for type of soiled linen.
• Unloads washers of clean linen in Clean Core side of laundry and loading dryers. Maintains and has full knowledge of dryer settings and using proper settings for type of clean linen.
• The incumbent has full knowledge of operating Wet System Finisher for patients clothing and uniforms.
• The incumbent has full knowledge of all laundry record keeping, paper, and computer files. Makes independent decisions when handling linen and sets priorities. Sorts clean linen to assure proper distribution throughout the facility.
