The Dayton Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) is recruiting for a Motor Vehicle Operator position. The Motor Vehicle Operator position will function within Nutrition and Food Services. The primary purpose of the Motor Vehicle Operator is to operate up to a 28,000 pound Refrigerated Box Truck to transport food, expendable supplies, messages, and equipment to satellite units according to an established delivery schedule.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

  • Ability to Drive Safely (Motor Vehicles)

Commercial Driver's License (Screen-Out): A valid state-issued Class B or higher Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required for this position.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work environment comprises an area of extreme temperatures. Duties may require moving in and out of -20 degree F. walk-in freezers, and 90 degree F. to 110 degree F. kitchen. Works in an environment which is often uncomfortably, warm and noisy. As Motor Vehicle Operator is required to work outside and is occasionally exposed to bad weather conditions while loading and unloading the truck; is exposed to the possibility of serious accidents while driving; and is subject to cuts, bruises, slips, and trips when loading and unloading the truck.

Responsibilities:

The Motor Vehicle Operator duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Fills out the Preventive Maintenance Service Record and reporting and any accident or needed repair of the vehicle of its equipment to Engineering Service.
  • Cleans vehicle to maintain neat appearance and sanitary conditions.
  • Handles equipment properly to prevent breakage or damage.
  • Distributes load to prevent damage, provide maximum space and avoid tip over using proper loading and unloading procedures.
  • Maintains regularly established schedules and/or trip assignments.
  • Conforms to all regulations for safety in the use of tools and equipment and in work practices with minimal supervision.
  • Notifies appropriate person of requests from the satellite units for food items or supplies.
  • Follows all safety rules, regulations, traffic signs, and laws and is responsible for the safe transport of cargo.
  • Loads, positions, and unloads cargo assuring it doesn't interfere with the safe operation of the vehicle.
  • Interprets instructions and specifications related to mobile equipment operation..
  • Uses the security procedures required to safeguard the food, supplies, and equipment in the department.
  • Secures carts in truck so as to minimize movement and prevent damage to carts, equipment, or other materials.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles, such as checking tires, battery, fuel and water.
  • Drives vehicles equipped with air brakes.
  • Follows the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) guidelines.
Work Schedule: 5:00PM to 8:00PM / 4:00PM-8:00PM days off rotate, 32 hours per pay period (16 hours per week)
