An advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) has prescriptive authority with a panel of patients. Core functions include diagnosing and treating acute and chronic health care problems, prescribing medication and treatments and is an independent practitioner providing quality and standard of care to a population of Veteran patients. Teaches health promotion and disease prevention to patients.
Basic Requirements:
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required.

Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (45 lbs), straight pulling (6 hr), pushing (2 hrs), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, walking (6hrs), standing (2 hrs), repeated bending (6 hrs), ability to distinguish basic colors, hearing (aid permitted).

- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
- English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
- Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
- Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
- 3 years or more Nurse Practitioner in Emergency Medicine or Urgent Care with at least 1 year experience within past 5 years.
- Emergency Medicine (ENP-C) or Adult Gerontology Acute Care Certification (AGACNP-BC).
- Certification as ARNP.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with a major as a nurse practitioner
- Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
- Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
- Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.

Responsibilities:
The Emergency Department has 25 rooms with 2 triage rooms, 2 psychiatry "low stim" rooms, 2 negative airflow rooms and 3-4 rooms are run as 'Fast Track" urgent care rooms. Most frequent presenting problems are chronic illness with acute exacerbation's and acute problems are mainly of cardiac, respiratory, and gastrointestinal origin. The Nurse Practitioner provides care to Veterans for acute and urgent medical problems and referrals to primary care for Veterans requesting primary care. Psychiatric emergencies are triaged and referred to psychiatric specialty as PES (Psychiatric Emergency Services).Duties include but not limited to:
- Consistently performs comprehensive physical, psychological and social assessments.
- Ability to work cooperatively with all staff that care for emergency department patients and their families.
- Detects early clinical changes in patient's condition.
- Effectively prioritizes actual and potential problem/needs.
- Able to independently perform necessary emergency medicine procedures such as incision & drainage, laceration repairs.
- Develops realistic and measurable outcomes for identified patient needs and evaluates patient's progress toward outcomes.
- Revises the plan of care when appropriate.
- Effectively intervenes in critical patient care situations.
- Orthopedic splinting and simple fracture management, slit lamp examination, etc.
- Consistently documents and reports patient care that reflects the critical thinking process.
- Effectively guides all levels of nursing and ancillary staff assigned to the work unit.
- Able to lift up to 50 pounds as necessary.
- Capable of independently evaluating and treating adult patients for urgent and minor emergent medical complaints.
- Certification as ENP-C.
