Veterinary Surgical Center of Long Island (“VSCLI”) is seeking a New York State Licensed Veterinary Technician to join our Team.
VSCLI is a Specialty Referral Practice and a 24-Hour Emergency Care Hospital in Huntington, NY. Our brand-new 10,000 square-foot state-of-the-art hospital will open its doors in April 2024! VSCLI’s specialty services include: Emergency, Surgery, and Neurology. VSCLI is seeking a NYS Licensed Veterinary Technician to join our Team, and assist us in rapidly growing our specialty referral practice and 24-hour emergency hospital.
VSCLI is looking for a highly skilled Licensed Veterinary Technician who is dedicated to delivering the highest quality of medicine to our patients and thrives in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate will have the opportunity to join a collaborative and dedicated group that receives cases from a loyal referral community that desires the best care for the patient. A typical day would include surgery admissions, treatment of hospitalized pets, performing in clinic blood work as well as preparing samples for off-site labs, file documentation & invoicing, assisting with appointments, filling prescriptions, performing technician appointments, surgery prep, assisting in surgery, client call backs, surgery discharge and inventory management.
VSCLI is privately owned and strives to be the country’s premier surgical and emergency care hospital. We are progressive, team-oriented, and practice high-quality surgery, medicine, communication, and compassionate patient care. Our state-of-the-art hospital is equipped with a Canon 128 slice CT, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, 2 digital radiology rooms, endoscopic equipment for endoscopy, arthroscopy, and laparoscopy, ultrasound, laboratory, and Snyder oxygen cage.
Duties & Responsibilities
- General nursing care of patients.
- Responsible for cleaning, feeding and care of animals in surgery, surgery holding, medical and isolation areas.
· IV catheterization
· Blood collection
· Urine collection
· Post-surgical patient care
- Assists veterinarians with surgery, including cleaning, maintaining and sterilization of instruments and surgical equipment and area, animal prep/monitoring, post-op recovery and reports changes in condition
- Ensures that the assigned clinic areas are kept clean, sanitized and always uncluttered.
· Administration of anesthesia, observing protocols
- Monitoring of patients while under anesthesia and during recovery.
- Performs physical exams on animals including a variety of animal health procedures encompassing diagnostic lab tests (for in-house lab test and off-site lab testing), administration of meds, and assisting with or performing medical treatments.
- Administer prescribed medications, as directed.
- Responsible for accurate & timely data entry
- Promotes responsible pet ownership and answers questions concerning animal health, behavior, and care.
- Other duties as assigned, including responding to an emergency event.
· Perform diagnostic testing, including Radiography, CT scanner, MRI
Position Knowledge & Skill Requirements
- Professional client communication and education obtaining medical histories and symptoms
- Laboratory procedures including but not limited to: hematology, cytology, urinalysis, blood chemistry
- Diagnostic imaging (Radiography, CT Scan, MRI) and implementing safety protocols of fellow staff members
- Nursing skills including: restraining patients, administering medications PO/IV/SUBQ/IM, maintaining bandages, proficient IV catheter placement and venipuncture, surgery prep, anesthesia monitoring
· Must possess strong communication skills, good judgment and be able to manage stressful situations, and work with others on a team respectfully
· Venipuncture, catheterization, anesthetic monitoring (both manual & electronic), surgical prep & assisting, IV fluid administration & monitoring (fluid pumps), cleaning, perform digital radiographs, intubation, administer injections, administer oral medications, nursing & patient monitoring skills, perform in-clinic lab, organizational skills, communication, listening and documentation.
Position Qualifications
· New York State Licensed Veterinary Technician
· High School Diploma (or equivalent), Associates Degree, or Bachelor’s Degree
· Minimum 1-3 years of experience
· Knowledge of basic veterinary medical terminology
· Ability to lift 40 pounds
· Ability to use a computer.
