What are the responsibilities and job description for the Marine Fire Service Technician position at Viking Life-Saving Equipment?
Areas of responsibility:
The Service Technician Marine Fire and Safety (MFS), performs inspection and maintenance of all Fire, Safety & Rescue products and is the primary company contact for ships' superintendents, officers & crew during inspections and maintenance service. In addition, the Service Technician, MFS maintains workshop equipment, prepares paperwork for certificates, and provides necessary technical assistance and labor to complete projects both in the shop and onboard vessels/rigs.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
▪ Perform inspections and provide maintenance on all Fire, Safety and Rescue products for clients, both aboard ships/rigs and in service facilities (fixed and portable Fire systems, Self-contained Breathing Apparatus, Emergency Escape Breathing Devices, associated hoses and pipes), UTI tapes, portable and fixed gas detection instruments
▪ Identify ships’ needs and requirements based on ship’s classification and flag and applicable manufacturer’s requirements
▪ Inspect and maintain Company-owned property, such as liquid level indicators, compressor test units, various tools and service safety equipment used in the execution of the position responsibilities
▪ Use hand and power tools such as pipe threading machine, as required to maintain, service, repair and build various items used in the performance of job responsibilities
▪ Provide technical assistance and labor assistance as needed to facilitate servicing customer needs on a timely basis
▪ Other responsibilities, tasks and projects as may be assigned
Required / Desired Knowledge, Experiences and Skills:
▪ Knowledge of applicable Fire, Safety and Rescue marine rules
▪ Knowledge of electrical circuits and mechanical piping configurations
▪ 2 to 3 year’s demonstratable experience working with the following equipment types: o Portable Fire Extinguishers (Powder, CO2, Foam and Water) o Fixed installation CO2, Halon, Powder and Foam fire systems o Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), Emergency Escape Breathing Devices (EEBD) o Hydraulic Pressue Testing for (CO2, Halon, AIR, N2 and oxygen cylinders) o Water Hydrants, including applicable hoses, couplings and branch pipes o Portable gas detection equipment
▪ Experience performing inspections and providing services to various Fire, Safety and Rescue equipment
▪ Attention to detail ▪ A self-starter driven to excellence
▪ Customer service orientation
▪ Willing to pitch in and assist in other areas as needed ▪ Able to work on the customer’s schedule (weekends, etc.)
▪ Position is subject to the DOT drug screening rules
▪ Ability to stand for extended periods of time, manuever obstacles typically found on ships/rigs (such as steep stairs, low overhead clearances) ▪ Able to lift up to 70 pounds
Education/Certifications:
▪ High school diploma required; graduate of a technical training institute preferred
▪ Ability to secure a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) card and required license(s)
▪ Valid driver’s license
Physical Working Environment:
This position works both within warehouse/service facilities and on board ships/rigs. Therefore, the position is exposed to the sorts of working conditions and weather typically associated with working on board ships and outdoors. The position will require routine travel, primarily by vehicle.
