Description
The Village of Glendale Heights is seeking a full-time Building Inspector in the Building Services Division of the Community Development Department. This position performs a variety of routine and complex administrative and technical tasks including but not limited to skilled review of building and building system plans, field inspection of construction sites, and general support of the permitting, licensing, code enforcement, and emergency response functions of the department. The Building Inspector position works under the general supervision of the Building Services Supervisor.
Responsibilities for this position include:
- Provides technical building code advice to supervisors, boards, commissions, civic groups and the public. Works closely with Village consultants and performs plan reviews for compliance with adopted building codes and regulations.
- Inspects residential, commercial, and industrial buildings, structures and properties to ensure public safety and compliance with Village Codes and approved plans. Other activities include rental licensing, real estate transfer and vacant building inspections.
- Performs property maintenance enforcement and inspections to ensure compliance with all related codes and ordinances. Provides testimony in prosecution of enforcement activities.
- Responds to general inquiries from the public about Village building codes, construction and other related matters as well as after-hours callouts and emergencies.
- Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.
Minimum requirements include:
- Valid State of Illinois Class D Drivers License Required.
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with course work in construction, project management, architecture, engineering or technical training in related fields.
- Three (3) years of experience in building construction or trades with code compliance experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
- Certification by the International Code Council as a Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector, or the ability to obtain certification within one year of hire.
- Ability to perform inspections and/or related duties after regular work hours as required.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, codes and related technical documents.
- Ability to write reports, as well as perform computer data entry and correspondence.
- Strong customer service skills as well as the ability to independently plan, prioritize, and organize work and complete assignments within a deadline driven environment.
- Ability to apply conflict resolution techniques to bring about effective solutions to a building related issue or matter.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess certification from the International Code Council as a Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector, Commercial Building Inspector, and a Residential Building Inspector. Preference will be given for military service and foreign language proficiency. A Licensed Plumber or Plumbing Inspector in the State of Illinois is highly desired.
Hourly Pay Range: $34.61 - $47.11, commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a non-exempt, AFSCME union position. The Village of Glendale Heights offers an excellent benefit package including health and dental insurance.
