Summary

VCU’s Facilities Management Department is seeking to hire a General Maintenance Technician for Facilities Operations in the Student Affairs Zone.

The Facilities Operations Department is dedicated to providing high quality workmanship and service delivered in a cost-effective manner in support of the University's mission.

Our Goal is to be the facilities maintenance and service provider of choice to our customers.

The intent and success of Zone Maintenance is the consistent, responsive service that is provided by assigned staffs who have ownership and accountability for providing a complete job, and support the goals of Virginia Commonwealth University by maintaining and operating the University's capital assets to facilitate effective and efficient educational delivery.

The General Maintenance Technician is primarily responsible for assisting the Trades Supervisor/Manager for the Division of Student Affairs in overseeing the completion of maintenance, repairs, and replacement of appliance-related work orders. They will be the primary source of appliance repairs within the Student Affairs Zone. This person must be technically inclined and good with their hands to complete repairs in a proper and timely manner, and will be responsible for maintaining a database that would track replacement, warranty, age, and repair history on all of our appliances. Along with the appliance responsibilities, this position requires the performing of general maintenance tasks such as minor electrical, plumbing, carpentry, etc., and this position identifies contracting and maintenance problems and performs building maintenance inspections to assure there is a safe, comfortable, and pleasant environment for all faculty, staff, and students. The selected candidate must be able to work rotating on-call shifts and be able to work in inclement weather and when there is a designated emergency.

Minimum Hiring Standards

  • Requires a minimum of several years of appliance repair or related experience
  • Requires a full understanding of the fundamentals of electricity and schematics
  • Basic knowledge and experience utilizing the use of various craft tools
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications
  • Computer literacy is required
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • State of Virginia Driver's License required
  • Designated to work and be on call during emergencies and inclement weather
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU

Preferred Hiring Standards

  • Type I CFC Certification and/or Universal CFC Certification preferred, or ability to obtain within one year

Required Licensure/Certification

  • State of Virginia Driver's License
