Job Description

Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a statewide system of community colleges.

It primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York.

This is a full time restricted classified position. Continuation of employment is based on funding availability.

The Enrollment Management department provides prospective and continuing students opportunities for success through a variety of informational and enrollment services.

Enrollment services are provided on a continuous basis from the time of the individual’s formal entry to Virginia Peninsula Community College, through graduation and beyond.

The department supports the instructional programs of the College through transfer credit evaluation, graduation clearance, annual calendar planning, enrollment reporting, and registration.

The department also maintains regulatory requirements pertaining to database maintenance, application processing, domicile determination, and academic records management.

Through its recruitment and admission services, the department supports educational outreach efforts and promotes the College as a viable education resource in the community, in the workplace, and in the minds of potential students.

The Student Recruitment and On-Boarding Specialist, Special Populations enriches the student recruitment and on-boarding efforts for the college, ensuring a positive and seamless transition into our community.

This position works closely with the Coordinator for Recruitment and Outreach and will be assigned to a segment of our service area with primary work focused on special populations.

The incumbent will identify and participate in outreach and recruitment activities while cultivating strong relationships with prospective students interested in credit and non-credit career and technical education programs.

This position assists in the coordination of on-campus events and programs targeted towards prospective students, parents, school counselors, and community members within their assigned segment.

The position’s main goal is to increase enrollment through the recruitment and on-boarding of special population students in the assigned service area segment. Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's / Required Qualifications

  • Experience coordinating events and activities.
  • Experience presenting to large and small groups.
  • Flexibility to work evening and weekend hours.
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.
  • A valid driver’s license with the ability to travel throughout service area.
  • Able to work at all campuses.

Knowledge :

  • General knowledge of academic and workforce programs.
  • General knowledge of student recruitment and retention trends and best practices.
  • General knowledge of special population needs.
  • General knowledge of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
  • Understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion principles in a higher education setting.
  • Knowledge of special populations demographics.
  • Knowledge of unique needs and changes in accessing higher education.
  • Awareness of cultural competency and sensitivity to effectively engaged with diverse population.

  • Excellent public speaking and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships and establish rapport special population students.
  • Problem solving skills to address challenges and barriers faced by special population students in a higher education setting.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, databases, student information systems.

  • Able to make sound decisions based on policies, rules, best practices, and available information.

Additional Considerations

  • Experience working in admissions, advising, or related student services in a higher education setting.
  • Experience working with PeopleSoft SIS, EAB Navigate, Salesforce or other CRM tools.
  • Experience in outside sales, cold calling, marketing, or comparable field.
  • Experience with applicable laws, rules, and regulations related to higher education, including those related to student privacy and academic policies .
