What are the responsibilities and job description for the Academic Advisor position at Virginia Danville Community College?
Danville Community College developed from two institutions, Danville Technical Institute and the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute opened in 1936 as Danville Textile School, becoming Danville Technical Institute just after World War II. The Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute first began as an engineering division in 1946 and was later expanded to include the first two years of course work for all engineering, business administration, liberal arts, and science majors. Beginning in the summer of 1966, all programs taught by Danville Technical Institute were brought under the Virginia Department of Community Colleges. Effective July 1, 1968, the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute merged with the existing community college providing the comprehensive programs now offered.
- Assist potential students from the point of inquiry to credential completion
- Assist with college application process
- Connect students to financial aid resources through the FAFSA and/or FANTIC application and to scholarship opportunities through the college’s foundation
- Discuss career and educational goals and available pathways with students, including traditional academic degree programs, transfer programs and short-term workforce credential opportunities, including G3 and Fast Forward programs
- Assist student with using Navigate to develop and document academic and career plans
- Ensure the student successfully completes the enrollment process, including course registration Support students through their academic and/or workforce-credentialing journey
- Orient students to resources available through the college (food pantry, transportation, etc.)
- Provide proactive academic advising and career counseling
- Guide students to tutoring and other academic supports as needed o Assist students with barriers that may affect success/retention
- Respond to early alerts in Navigate and provide interventions as appropriate, in consultation with faculty members
- Provide follow up to ensure students meet benchmarks on pathway to completing credentials or degrees Utilize technology and other resources to connect with students
- Utilize Navigate to manage communication campaigns with students, including outreach to potential students as needed
- Document interactions with students through Navigate’ s case management systems *Manage and respond to Navigate’ s early alert interventions
- Assist students in learning to utilize important registration and advising technology Contribute to the success of student services team
- Accurately account for all inquiries and admissions activity
- Ensure that all necessary documents and forms are completed accurately and in a timely manner
- Keep all required reports current and accurate
- Work collaboratively with college faculty and staff in support of student success
- Attend all required department meetings and training sessions
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in related field
- Excellent customer service skills, including the ability to effectively follow up and follow through
- Work experience in an educational setting
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Proficient in use of technology, including Microsoft Office
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently as well as part of a team
- Strong interpersonal skills to help engage, provide support to, and motivate students
- Excellent organizational skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Education, training, and/or work experience equivalent to a Master’s degree in student services, higher education, counseling, social services, adult education, or a related field
- Work experience in a higher education setting in counseling or academic coaching
- Knowledge of available financial aid and scholarship information
- Knowledge of PeopleSoft, Navigate and other educational technologies
- Knowledge of barriers to educational success and a desire to help others reach their educational goals
- Experience working with racially, ethnically, economically and age diverse individuals
- Desire to learn and grow as professional needs arise
