Job Description
The LICENSE team within the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation (OVPRI) and the Center for Power Electronics Systems (CPES) at Virginia Tech are seeking an Intellectual Property (IP) Specialist to join the LICENSE team. The IP Specialist will collaborate closely with CPES to assist in administering the CPES IP portfolio and other portions of the Virginia Tech IP portfolio as needed. LICENSE, within the Division of Innovation & Partnerships, is taking a holistic and integrated approach to commercialization of technology from “discovery to market” to ensure strategic partnerships and innovation management deliver impacts and growth for the university, region, state, and beyond. This position will assist both LICENSE and CPES leadership in the administration of IP owned and licensed by Virginia Tech.
The Intellectual Property (IP) Specialist manages the administration and maintenance of Virginia Tech’s worldwide intellectual property portfolio (involving patents, copyrights, trademarks and licensing), as well as preparation of legal documents and providing other documentation and compliance support. The ideal candidate is energetic, able to work independently and with a team, flexible, and highly organized with an extreme attention to detail. The successful incumbent must be able to juggle multiple projects and thrive in a fast-paced environment while maintaining confidentiality and a positive attitude. This position has a dual reporting structure to CPES’ Director and to the Director of Technology Commercialization at LICENSE. The position will be located on the campus of Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, with time split between the LICENSE and CPES offices to ensure a close working relationship to both LICENSE and CPES.
Required Qualifications
- Technical Diploma, Associate Degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Demonstrated experience with IP prosecution matters
- Demonstrated project management experience
- Strong communication skills across multi-disciplinary teams
- Demonstrated experience with event planning or event support
- Demonstrated experience using office software such as databases, word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, and email
- Strong problem solving skills
