Tugmaster/Captain

Tugmasters/Captains is responsible for the vessel and her crew, and the safe and economical operation of the vessel.

This is a full-time position. Day and hours are determined based on business necessity. This position frequently requires long hours and weekend work. Travel is primarily local; however some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to tour all vessels, piers, docks and work sites
  • Capable of lifting and moving equipment that may weigh more than 100 pounds
  • Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, climb, push, pull, reach, kneel, and squat. Use hands to handle, or feel, and talk or hear
  • Hand-eye coordination, quick reaction time, control precision, depth perception and manual dexterity
  • Perform their duties during all types of weather, night and day, and while the boat is moving
  • Noise level in the shipyard work environment can be loud. No seasickness or fear of heights.
  • Must be physically and medically qualified to wear required personal protective equipment

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Navigation of the boat, preparing schedules, and plan of action for the boat Assist with berthing or unberthing of ships, or to guide a ship through perilous or difficult waterways
  • Meet the ship at sea to attach a line before skillfully guiding it to its berth
  • Pusher tugs can be used to push long trains of barges on rivers and inland waterways
  • Ocean going tugs can be involved in salvage, rescue, fire-fighting and pollution prevention
  • Controlling access to the vessel and screening of persons, baggage, supplies, stores and personal effects brought on board
  • Detailed knowledge of the waters
  • Know how and when to use the emergency equipment located on the boat
  • Ability to direct participation in the following: making tow; transfer of rigging; lay rigging; handle lines; shifting barges; drop or pickup barges; checking tow; move and operate portable pumps; assist in making locks or bridges; assist in mid-stream transfers; catching a line on deck fittings, work lines at docks, casting lines while underway
  • Ensure routine housekeeping duties; and general maintenance of the boat and barge are completed
  • Familiar with their emergency duty and develop an acceptable skill level in their emergency role
  • Hold emergency drills for every crewmember
  • Off duty, it is their responsibility to get adequate sleep and rest so they can work safely and efficiently when required; may be requested to return to a boat during their scheduled time off if an emergency occurs
  • Ensure complete tool checks are conducted before operating equipment
  • Other duties as assigned

Required

  • Must have a High School diploma or equivalent
  • 2-3 years supervisory experience
  • 4-6 years experience running tugboat required
  • Maintain required Coast Guard certifications and medical clearance within last 12 months
  • Ability to obtain base badge where assigned
  • Must be able to read, write, hear, interact and communicate with all types of personnel
