Position Summary: Perform electrical and mechanical installation, preventive maintenance and repairs on all plant electrical systems, machinery, and equipment to ensure maximum uptime and production readiness; perform special projects related to the installation of new equipment and lines and the redesign of existing equipment and lines. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Manager Maintenance and Controls with some latitude for the exercise of independent judgment in performing day-to-day assignments; may lead or train other Line Mechanics; may be on-call nights and weekends for emergency or unscheduled repairs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Troubleshoots and repairs production equipment, facilities, and electrical systems; responds to emergency calls.
  • Inspects and performs preventive maintenance on plant electrical systems, machinery, and equipment to minimize downtime; evaluates and makes recommendations regarding maintenance and repairs.

  • Installs new equipment, rebuilds and/or fabricates parts not commercially available using hand and other machine tools.

  • Reviews work orders daily for repair and maintenance of machinery and electrical equipment including engines, motors, pneumatic tools, mixers, packaging equipment, conveyor systems, and other production machines and facility equipment; estimates material requirements and repairs and/or replaces defective parts as needed; analyzes electrical and other operations problems and takes corrective action; reports all unsafe equipment, machinery, and practices to Maintenance Manager.
  • Maintains inventory of tools, parts, repair supplies and other materials; obtains quotes for replacement parts and materials and prepares requisitions as needed; maintains tools and equipment in good working order.
  • Works with Engineers to install new equipment, install new lines, and redesign and set up existing production lines.
  • Installs and repairs electrical wiring, fixtures, and equipment; measures, cuts, and bends wire and conduit; replaces faulty electrical components including fuses, light sockets, bulbs, relays, switches, and motors; rewires motors; reviews wiring diagrams, specifications, or instructions from manager for repairs, installations, or inspections to be performed.
  • Installs PLC’s, controls, instrumentation, etc. and stays current on these new technologies: trains mechanics to trouble shoot and repair instruments and to make electrical repairs within the plants.
  • Installs, repairs, calibrates, services, and replaces electronic devices and systems.
  • May train Line Mechanics in maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic equipment; may lead Line Mechanics in the performance of day-to-day responsibilities or special projects.
  • Prepares reports and maintains records of purchases, daily activities, work orders, preventive maintenance, etc.
  • Performs all work in accordance with Barr’s quality and safety guidelines and procedures; demonstrates clear understanding of the quality and safety objectives.
  • May perform other work and special projects as required by manager.
  • Safely cleans up and disposes of hazardous materials / accumulates hazardous waste generated during maintenance activities.

Qualifications/Experience:

Must be a licensed master electrician with seven to ten years of experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical and mechanical equipment. Lean manufacturing experience a plus.

Must have experience with AC/DC motors and controllers, VFD’s and MCC’s; must have working knowledge of PLC’s and their operation; must have the ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and engineering documents; must have experience with running conduit and pulling wire; must have the ability to install and maintain process instrumentation including sensors, transmitters, controllers and final control elements for measurement and control of temperature, pressure, level and flow.

Must have mechanical aptitude, demonstrated ability to work with hands and use various tools; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to read, write, speak, and comprehend English; ability to work with minimal supervision; must be organized with good written and oral communication skills; ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment; ability to work overtime as required.

Work Environment/Physical Demands/Travel:

  • Manufacturing environment with loud noise level.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, reach, climb, stoop, talk, hear, and see for extended periods of time; regularly lift or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds; specific vision abilities include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to read and understand documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, correspondence; ability to write routine reports and correspondence; ability to speak and present information in small groups of suppliers or employees of the company.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, fractions and decimals; ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to interpret diagrams and charts.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions given in written, oral, or diagram form; ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to have limited exposure to fumes or airborne particles; ability to work near moving equipment; ability to climb in overhead structures and work beneath machines in close quarters to perform installations, repairs, and maintenance; regularly exposed to vibration; may be exposed to the risk of electrical shock.
