Medical/Behavioral Health Billing Specialist

The Medical Billing Specialist is responsible for billing a variety of payers for the various mental health and behavioral health services provided by WBHS, using an electronic medical record (EMR). This position also performs various accounts receivable duties, including applying payments, patient statements and collections.

MAIN DUITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Prepare and submit electronic billing using the EMR and Quickbooks and related billing and service reports
• Retrieve and reconcile remittance advices from payer websites and clearinghouse and apply payments from all sources in the EMR
• Track and monitor aging AR and ensures that problems with claims are identified and resolved in a timely manner
• Problem solve and follow up with insurance companies to collect payment on unpaid claims
• Contact persons served as needed to collect payment on patient responsibility amounts
• Submit prior authorization requests to the various payers and enter authorization information in the EMR
• Verify insurance for all persons served each month in the MN-ITS and payer websites; ensure that insurance information is accurate and updated in the EMR
• Maintain knowledge of and follow policies and procedures for compliance and protect confidentiality of all PHI

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

• Associate degree in medical billing, accounting or a closely related field and two years of related experience OR high school diploma or GED and four years of related experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience in an outpatient or community-based mental health or substance use disorder services setting
