SUMMARY OF POSITION:
Assist the Food Services Manager with the preparation and provision of meals and quality hospitality services for City Mission, its programs, clients, staff and guests. Supervise, train and prepare part time/weekend employees and residents in Food Service Work Therapy for potential entry into the food service industry and independent living.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- In collaboration with and under the supervision of Food Services Manager, ensure that meals are provided for all targeted recipients.
- Solely in charge of all areas of the kitchen and staff in the absence of the Food Service Manager.
- Determine in stock supplies and place orders with vendors as needed.
- Supervise and train residents and OVR participants:
- Teach/Coach fundamental food service competencies and skills.
- Teach/Coach basic kitchen operations and hospitality.
- Minister and encourage, promoting growth and development of students and residents; facilitate teamwork, time management, and problem resolution.
- Open kitchen and begin operations on weekends and other shifts when Manager is not present; responsible for meal prep, service and clean-up.
- Insure proper use, cleaning and storage of equipment.
- Put away orders and donations; insure proper food handling and storage.
- Assist with menu planning as needed.
- Observe established health and safety standards and procedures, including those of USDA, OSHA and ServSafe
- Inspect all deliveries upon arrival for freshness and quality.
- Arrange goods within the food pantry and organize special requirements for certain stock, such as perishables or fragile goods, as directed.
- Conduct inventory and assist with storage of food and supplies
- Ensure donated food is properly receipted
- Take and report meal counts.
- Prepare and submit both formal and informal reports and/or presentations to Food Services Manager and selected external audiences, or other groups as requested.
- Responsible for training, supervising and mentoring Part Time weekend staff.
- Attend internal and external meetings and trainings as requested or expected.
- Additional duties as requested.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Christian with a ministry mindset, interested in ministering to the poor and homeless, demonstrating Christ’s love
- Strong kitchen management skills
- Able and willing to model and teach food service skills and Christian character development
- Knowledge of food safety and handling practices
- Able to cook tasteful meals with attractive presentations
- Proficient in food service math: scaling recipes, calculating percentages, estimating, projecting, reporting, etc.
- Able and willing to both follow recipes as well as create recipes and to train students and residents from inception/creation to final plating.
- Good eye-hand motor skills: precise, careful, and safety conscious
- Interpersonal skills, able to clearly communicate verbally and promote teamwork and apply problem solving skills with residents, OVR and large staff of volunteers.
- Able to work with diverse groups of people, treating all with dignity and respect
- Computer literate, knowledgeable in Word, Excel, and Email
- Knowledge of 12-steps/recovery/mental illness preferred
- Valid Pennsylvania driver’s license
- Reliable, trustworthy and open to learning new ways of doing things and enhancing existing skill set
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution or equivalent applicable work experience
- Degree in Culinary Arts or Nutrition greatly preferred
- Minimum three years of experience in managing, planning and operating a food service establishment
- Minimum one-year previous supervision and management of personnel
- Previous experience working with homeless, addicted, mentally ill highly desirable

The Food Services Assistant Manager is required to perform all of the above on an on-going and rotational basis with frequent consistency.
