What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sr. Accounting Assistant position at Washington County, Oregon?

The Department of Juvenile Services is currently looking for a talented Senior Accounting Assistant to join our financial team!

The successful candidate will possess a strong financial background, has a technical skillset in computerized financial systems, and is adept at payroll processes and governmental accounting. Working alongside a three member financial team, the candidate will know how to develop and maintain solid relationships while exemplifying the Mission, Values and Goals of the Juvenile Department as we serve the youth and families in our community.

The ideal candidate will have:
  • extensive financial experience in accounting and accounting principals, including managing computerized accounting systems.  
  • payroll experience, as well as accounts payable and receivable and contract experience.  
  • an eye for detail. 
  • the ability to work under pressure while managing several competing deadlines.

  1. Maintaining a chart of accounts
  2. Preparing, reviewing, and posting journal entries to the County financial system and reconciling general ledger account balances; researching and resolving reconciliation issues as necessary.
  3. Preparing invoices for contracts and receiving and records payments on these contracts.
  4. Assisting in creating a positive and supportive work environment, and building a culture of teamwork and communication 
  5. Creating a workplace that promotes the organizational values of workplace diversity, equity and inclusion and actively promoting an environment respectful of living and working in a diverse community.
  6. Providing functional and technical information and instructions regarding applicable procedures and methods. 
  7. Interpreting and explaining rules and regulations
  8. Maintaining payment and retainage records for contracts.

  • Possession of an Associate's Degree in accounting, business, or related field AND two (2) or more years of work experience related to accounting, bookkeeping, or fiscal management; OR
  • Accounting Certificate (12 months) AND three (3) or more years of work experience related to accounting, bookkeeping, or fiscal management; OR
  • Five (5) or more years of work experience related to accounting, bookkeeping, or fiscal management.
Additional Licenses, Certificates, Physical Abilities, and Specialty Requirements:  
  • Must pass a comprehensive background investigation.

  4. Panel Interview(s): Our goal is to schedule panel interviews with candidates who successfully pass the SME Review as soon as possible.
  5. Conditional Offer of Appointment: Human Resources will conduct a salary analysis for the successful candidate(s) and extend an offer of appointment.
  6. Post-Offer Check: The successful candidate will undergo a background check.
  7. Start Date: A start date will be determined after all conditions of employment have been met.
