Position Summary This position, under close supervision of a licensed nurse, is responsible for assisting the nursing staff in caring for patients. Primary duties are focused on direct patient care activities that assist the nursing staff with obtaining favorable patient outcomes and include but are not limited to vital signs, intake and output, bathing, hygiene, assisting with meals, ambulation and transportation of patients. This position may retrieve and transport select medications and blood products, including transportation of a sealed medication tray for the purpose of crash cart exchange. The nursing assistant will not participate in the administration or distribution of medications directly to patients. The nursing assistant is responsible for helping the department meet its goal with regard to quality of care, budget, patient satisfaction, national patient safety goals, and regulatory requirements. This position has exposure to body fluids, radiation and communicable disease. The majority of work time is spent standing and/or walking of short distances, with frequent pushing, pulling, and lifting of up to 100 lbs. (with assistance), and occasional carrying of up to 25 lbs. A culturally and linguistically diverse patient population is served including adolescents, adults and geriatrics, with the majority being adults and geriatrics. Licenses/Certifications Required Diploma/GED, CPR within 90 days of Date of Hire Specific Educational or Skill Competencies Required Effective communication skills and the ability to follow written and verbal instructions and the ability to operate standard office equipment. Successful completion of high school studies or G.E.D. is required. Familiarity with patient care procedures is required as usually demonstrated by completion of a nursing assistant training program or completion of a first semester of an accredited nursing program. Knowledge of medical terminology is strongly recommended. State certification as a nursing assistant is encouraged, but not required. Completion of CPR is encouraged during the orientation period.
