SCHOOL POLICE SERGEANT

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under direction, supervises school police officers in law enforcement activities and patrols school properties to prevent and control crimes against Washoe County School District property, students, and personnel. Under direction, may supervise other non- sworn and/or personnel under the direction and control of Washoe County School District Police Department.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinates law enforcement activities and supervises assigned school police officers.
  • Coordinates non-law enforcement activities and supervises assigned non-sworn personnel.
  • Provides input into the evaluation of assigned staff.
  • Works in conjunction with the Police Department and the Office of Labor Relations administrators on the initial phase of progressive discipline of School Police Officers and/or non-sworn positions.
  • Responsible for ensuring each member under his/her supervision is professionally trained.
  • Inspects subordinates for personal appearance, maintenance of equipment, driving habits, and General Order compliance.
  • Recommends changes in procedures and practices to improve operations.
  • Testifies in court, as required.
  • Performs, participates in, and coordinates internal investigations.
  • Conducts briefings and makes assignments.
  • Supervises the investigation of such incidents as burglary, theft, arson, malicious mischief, vandalism, assault, and disturbances to determine action to be taken.
  • Interrogates, apprehends, cites, executes warrants and arrests, transports, books, and advises suspects of their constitutional rights.
  • Inspects schools and other District properties to maintain security.
  • Writes reports such as arrest, burglary, vandalism, theft, private property, and accident reports, issues appropriate citations.
  • Reviews and approves the reports of subordinates for accuracy and clarity and provides substantive recommendations.
  • Impounds and secures evidence for legal proceedings.
  • Responds to alarm calls and fire alarm calls to determine cause and takes appropriate action including notifications to the School District Office of Communications personnel.
  • Coordinates with the School District Emergency Management staff on active incidents and training.
  • Takes an active role in establishing the Incident Command System during active incidents.
  • Call emergency medical personnel, when necessary.
  • Conforms to safety standards, as prescribed.
  • Performs other tasks related to the position, as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience: Any combination of education/experience that could provide the required knowledge in qualifying.? A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

Education: High School Diploma, or equivalent.

And

Experience: Five (5) years of sworn law enforcement experience at a level equivalent to the District's School Police Officer position; And

Minimum of three (3) years post-probationary experience as a WCSD (Washoe County School District) School Police Officer and/or Detective.

And

Must have or be able to obtain within one (1) year of appointment, an Intermediate Nevada P.O.S.T. certificate.

Licenses/Certificates:

  • A valid driver's license that allows the applicant/employee to legally operate a motor vehicle in Nevada. Driver's license and safe driving record must be maintained for the assignment.
  • A current certificate in CPR and First Aid.
  • Copy of current driving history (dated within six (6) months from the date printed) issued by Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
  • Valid Nevada Peace Officers Certification. Certification must be maintained for the duration of the assignment.
  • Valid Nevada Basic Category I POST Certification must be maintained for the duration of the assignment.
  • Valid Intermediate Nevada POST Certification. Certification must be maintained for the duration of the assignment.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED at TIME of APPLICATION

  • High school transcript or other equivalent, (i.e., GED, foreign equivalency, etc.).
  • Copy of a valid driver's license that allows the applicant/employee to legally operate a motor vehicle in Nevada.
  • Copy of current driving history (dated within six (6) months from the date printed) issued by the DMV.
  • Valid Nevada Peace Officers Certification.
  • Valid Nevada Basic Category I POST Certification and valid Intermediate Nevada POST Certification.
  • Specifically documented evidence of training and experience to satisfy qualifications.

OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • This position is the first supervision level directing the work of sworn and non-sworn classes.
  • Must pass a physical examination and thorough background investigation (waived for current WCSD school police sworn employees).
  • Must complete a one-year probationary period.
  • Must have received a "meets standards" on most previous evaluations.
  • Cannot have any written reprimand or higher discipline within the past 12 months.
  • Must be willing to work off-hours, night, weekend, and/or holiday shifts on overtime and/or on 24-hour call
  • Carries a firearm, as directed by the Chief of School Police.

Salary Starts: $32.15

Salaries are subject to adjustment and may increase and decrease each fiscal year. New employees hired by Washoe County School District are normally placed on the entry step of the grade of the position.



Additional Job Information

This is a 40 hour per week, 260 day position.

INCENTIVES

Eligible employees of WCSD receive different benefits depending on their scheduled hours per week.

Eligible Employees who regularly work less than 20 hours per week receive Social Security benefits, salary increases, longevity bonuses, and credit union benefits.

Eligible Employees who regularly work 20 to 24.75 hours per week receive PERS retirement benefits, which are lifetime pension plans for public employees in various states,

In addition to the benefits above. Eligible Employees who regularly work 25 to 27.25 hours per week receive all the benefits above except medical, dental, and vision insurance.

Eligible Employees who regularly work 27.5 hours per week or more receive full benefits of the district, including medical, dental, and vision insurance, holiday pay, vacation pay, sick leave, life insurance, and insurance premiums for summer months.

All eligible employees also enjoy no state income tax and no Social Security deductions for most positions working 20 hours per week or more.

New employees will be fingerprinted upon hire and every five years thereafter and will have $58.50 deducted from their first paycheck to help defray the cost of fingerprinting. Non-licensed employees will have $58.50 deduction when their fingerprints are completed every five years. Fingerprint fees are subject to change.

Temporary employees working less than 6 months do not receive benefits.
