Position Summary:
The Teen Program Student Success Specialist will provide year-round support services to students enrolled in teen programs offered through the Department of College and Career Readiness at Parkridge Community Center. The position will academic and soft skill building, social support, and ongoing case management of students. Thereby leading to student persistence, retention, high school completion and successful transition college or a career. This person will work closely with students in the program focused on establishing relationships and work on academic support plans for attainment of short and long-term academic goals. The Student Success Specialist will assess service needs regularly to assist and support efforts toward identifying academic goals, needs, and developing an individualized academic plan for each student. Primary work location is Parkridge Community Center, while some work will occur at local high schools. This position is granted funded.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Manage a caseload of students and program participants, providing them with academic assistance and advising; monitors students’ academic progress with check-ins, scheduled meetings, proactive outreach, and communication; responding to student questions, concerns, and needs.
  • Regular communications with students, high school staff, and parents through various means such as e-mail, phone calls, classroom visits, face-to-face, and virtual conversations.
  • Assist students in accessing support services, at school or within the community.
  • Facilitate targeted interventions and soft skill workshops, such as time management to assist students in academic goal achievement, and facilitate academic planning workshops related to academic skills and success for current students, program participants and community members.
  • Work with students and participants individually or in small groups to build fundamental academic and soft skills using direct instruction methods and appropriate learning strategies.
  • Support guest presenters with room set up and facilitation of workshop.
  • Support student success programs and services to better meet the needs of students and participants.
  • Provide regular reports and data to Departmental Leadership concerning student success risks and intervention support; and effective solutions where appropriate.
  • Document student and participant interactions in appropriate college systems in a timely manner.
  • Promote events and activities including through the use of social media and mediums at the high school.
  • Attend regularly scheduled and emergency staff meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Hours/Schedule:
This is a part time position working an average of 10-15 hours/week to not exceed 20 hours/week in the afternoon and events. Includes occasional weekends and day time meetings or events.

Physical Demands:
  • The position requires long periods of sitting, standing, reading and writing, listening and speaking.
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Associate degree OR at least two (2) years of college course work completed in Education, Social Work, Human Services.
  • Proficient in use Microsoft Office (especially Excel) and database systems.
  • Experience with data tracking and preparing reports.
  • High level of energy, enthusiasm, and the ability to be innovative and creative.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to organize work, handle multiple tasks, and meet timelines in a multi-project environment.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations including first-generation, low income and under-represented individuals.
  • Ability to properly handle confidential materials.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to effectively manage high stress student issues and concerns.
  • Must be comfortable with public speaking.
