    Who We Are:
    Waukegan Community Unit School District No. 60 serves nearly 17,000 students in preschool through grade 12 and is located halfway between Chicago, Illinois and Milwaukee, Wisconsin on the shores of Lake Michigan. The District has one early learning center, 15 elementary schools, five middle schools and a high school program divided between two 9th – 12th grade campuses. The District encompasses portions of Waukegan, Beach Park and Park City.

    What We Need:
    The Safety Officer is to provide safety and security for students, staff and visitors. He/she is expected tomaintain confidentiality and must use discretion, tact, fairness and independent judgement when dealing with a variety of problems and emergency situations experienced by students and visitors. The security personnel must also exercise initiative in keeping informed of procedures and policies.

    Responsibilities:
    The Safety Officer will report to the Educational Safety Specialist (ESS), Director of Safety and Student Outreach, Safety and the building principal of the school he/she is assigned to.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Promote a safe and positive environment by observing and managing behavior of students, parents, and visitors on school property. Promote a safe school environment and ensure that school district policies and procedures are followed by supervising areas such as hallways, foyers, cafeteria, washrooms, and parking lots.
    • Assist in preventing and intervening in cases of vandalism and/or altercations.
    • Assist faculty with immediate safety problems
    • Assist students and visitors by directing them to the appropriate class or location.
    • Assist students who appear ill, distraught or otherwise needy by referring them to appropriate services.
    • Respond immediately to an administrative request for assistance.
    • Monitor hallways, parking lots, and other common areas to make sure students are where they should be at assigned times.
    • Enforce student discipline code.
    • Monitor the front entrance.
    • Check all of the doors that are locked.
    • Assist in searches, evacuations, or other emergency measures as directed by the building coordinator, or administrator.
    • Take appropriate actions to maintain safety.

    Other Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Inspect district property and observe activities on district property for unsafe conditions, which may lead to injury, report all potential safety hazards to their supervisor, and work with the supervisor to develop and maintain a program of safe conditions and practices for the welfare of the school.
    • Any other duties as assigned.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of Spanish desirable, good communication skills.

    Physical Requirements: Must have physical ability to move about frequently and quickly throughout the school.

    Qualifications and Experience Required: Meet district criteria and have experience as a safety officer.

    Specific Supervision Descriptions:
    • Be highly visible, roam the entire lunch area, interact with students, and enforce building policies
    • Roaming Halls – All hallways and appropriate bathrooms should be checked once in the first half of the session and again during the second half of the period.
    • Be visible outside the building at the end of each session and in the parking lot until parents and students have left the school grounds.
    • Inspect the building and assist the administrator in closing the building after each session.

    Additional Information:
    Required Staff Development May 31 and, Jun 1, 2023 830-1230pm

    Student attendance dates: June 5-30, 2023 (no school 6/19/23 in observance of Juneteenth)

    PreK-8th Grade Student hours: 830-1230pm Monday Through Thursday

    PreK-8th Grade staff hours: 815-1pm Monday Through Thursday

    9-12th Grade Student hours: 830-130pm Monday Through Thursday

    9-12th Grade staff hours: 815-145pm Monday Through Thursday



    Salary: Based on current hourly wages
