The position description below is for the Journey Lineman position. However, we are also open to hiring an Apprentice Lineman. Duties would be similar but would not be as comprehensive as the description below. Apprentice Lineman would be enrolled in the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities Apprentice Program which would be paid for by Waverly Utilities. Starting wage for an Apprentice Lineman is $24.54/hour.
JOB DESCRIPTION - JOURNEY LINEMAN
Summary: Perform all overhead and underground electrical work involved in the construction, maintenance, and operation of distribution, transmission, and street lighting systems. Fully supports the mission of Waverly Utilities.
Responsibilities:
· Responsible for field construction, maintenance, and troubleshooting distribution and transmission electrical systems.
· Work both overhead and underground lines with electric hot line equipment and tools.
· Connect transformer banks, fuses, and transformers; install wire; set poles; lay cable; and perform other necessary work.
· Knowledge to locate and operate breakers, switches, and reclosers in maintenance and power restoration situations.
· Install, maintain, and repair street lights.
· Inspect overhead and underground lines as part of our annual inspection according to Iowa Utility Board and Waverly Utilities requirements.
· Locate underground wires.
· Fill in for line foreman when necessary.
· Handle a variety of problems during and after storms, floods, and other emergencies.
· Make load checks and satisfy other customer service requests.
· Operate overhead and underground construction equipment.
· Responsible for the safety of line crew, the general public, and for following all applicable safety rules and regulations.
· Performing tree trimming operations.
· Maintain equipment in proper and safe working order.
· Instruct and teach apprentice line workers in proper work methods.
· Carry out written or oral instructions.
· Maintain time and work records.
· Perform related work, as required.
· Participate in rotating on-call duty as assigned
· Disconnects meters for non-payment on account and reconnects meters when payment has been made
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Competencies:
· Extensive experience in the erection, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground electrical systems and the use of industry tools, materials, and equipment.
· Must possess a basic knowledge of electrical theory.
· Skill in the proper use of line worker tools.
· A thorough knowledge of occupational hazards connected with the work.
· Ability to climb poles and towers and to perform all phases of electric transmission and distribution construction and maintenance work.
· Strength to perform manual work.
· Physical stamina to withstand work during adverse weather conditions.
· Graduation from an accredited high school.
· Graduate of an accredited power line technician school preferred plus 4-year apprenticeship.
· Must be able to communicate effectively with team members, staff and management.
· Ability to act with confidence and decisiveness in emergencies
· Willing to work nights, weekend and holidays as required.
· Demonstrated experience and/or physical ability to perform assigned tasks.
· Must possess valid Class A CDL with air brakes.
· Residency requirements apply.
· Must attain OSHA crane training certification within 1 year of employment.
