Job Goal:
This position is for an ESL teacher responsible for direct instruction of content-based ESL classes at the middle school level. Support for EL scholars will take place in both co-teach/push-in and pull-out settings.
This position will also:
- Support students transition from elementary bilingual education models;
- Foster scholars’ Social and Emotional Learning needs through school-wide initiatives.;
- Collaborate, plan, and teach with content-area teachers to provide support with for content learning through the use of ESL strategies and differentiation;
- Support content-area teachers as related to understanding the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) and integrating them into planning and instruction;
- Support planning and administration of the TELPAS
Candidate is responsible for planning, organizing, and presenting activities contributing to educational, social, and emotional development of students to enhance their self-worth and equip them with the basic knowledge, and skills needed to function in society. Considerable judgment, tact, patience, sensitivity, and flexibility are required to support scholars with varied cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds and learning styles. This position requires creativity and adaptive thinking to match teaching objectives, learning strategies, and instructional plans with scholars’ individual needs.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree (required)
- Proficiency in Spanish
- Valid Middle School Core Subjects Texas Educator Certificate and ESL Supplemental
- Meet requirements of “Highly Qualified” as per ESSA
- Experience implementing sheltered instructional practices (preferred)
- Co-teaching experience in Math, Science, and/or Social Studies (preferred)

- Apply knowledge of current education and instructional theories, methodologies, techniques, and principles, knowledge of subject matter, and knowledge of state, local, and federal laws and regulations affecting the lives and education of students.
- Establish and maintain a positive classroom culture which supports the learning of all scholars in a well-structured environment that promotes strong relationships and a clear focus on learning.
- Evaluate scholar learning using a variety of formative, summative, and screening assessment tools.
- Communicate effectively using a variety of media, work with others as a team, organize and maintain records, manage time and resources effectively and efficiently, and evaluate performance and provide constructive feedback.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Implement culturally responsive pedagogy
- Use a variety of research-based instructional practices to meet the needs of a diverse learning community.
- Align the planned, taught, and assessed curriculum ensuring that strong daily planning includes well-developed mastery objectives and effective assessments of scholar learning.
- Regularly use scholar data to inform instruction.
- Promote improved learning opportunities across campus by providing supplemental instruction on learning strategies instruction for scholars working to become proficient English speakers.
- Maintain a strong understanding of research and practices related to serving English Learners.
- Maintain records and document scholar progress (e.g., record grades and attendance, provide progress reports, monitor classroom accommodations).
- Perform all duties pertaining to area of expertise, as required.
- Maintain contact with parents through a variety of methods (email, phone calls, conferences).
- Maintain professional development through such activities as classes, conferences, seminars, workshops, and professional journals; provide technical guidance to less experienced teachers.
- Perform various administrative activities (e.g., attend faculty and staff meetings, request equipment and supplies, copy materials, create bulletin boards, obtain permission slips.)
- Prepare lesson materials, supplies, and equipment (e.g., copy materials, set up audio visual equipment, arrange lab materials.)
- Monitor scholar behavior both inside and outside the classroom (e.g., during class, in hallways between classes, and during assemblies, extracurricular activity meetings or events, fire drills, or other group activities.)
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
- Articulate the district’s mission and goals to the community and solicit its’ support in realizing the school’s mission.
- Perform other duties assigned by supervisor.
Physical Effort and Work Environment:
- Some movement throughout the classroom is generally necessary to facilitate learning (e.g., standing, walking, stooping, bending, sitting, and/or kneeling).
- Light lifting of materials and other objects associated with a classroom environment is required (e.g., books, teaching aids, up to approximately 20 – 40 lbs.).
- Field trips may be made.
- Candidate should be willing to contribute directly or indirectly to the development of children both inside and outside the classroom, which may include working hours in addition to the regular school day.
- This position may involve rare exposure to blood or body fluids.
- Regular attendance is required for this position.
Personal Work Relationships:
- Teacher receives regular and ongoing feedback and supervision.
- It is expected that less experienced candidates will receive additional guidance on instructional matters and that those with more experience will serve as mentors, providing suggestions, guidance, and assistance as necessary. .
- Teacher has significant contact with students, parents, and other school staff to provide instruction, offer guidance, exchange information, and develop social skills of students.
- Teacher may also build relationships within the community to enrich the content of materials and utilize additional instructional methodologies (e.g., take field trips, invite guest speakers.)

This position is exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The office hours are 7:15 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., however, from time to time may work an extended schedule, including weekends and evenings according to demands of the role and tasks.
