Overview of the Director of Engineering

Wayspring is seeking an experienced Director of Engineering that will be responsible for developing and maturing our in-house developed applications platforms and oversight of our software engineering development team. They will work as a tactical and strategic leader to help their teams accomplish day-to-day and development initiatives, create mid-term and long-term roadmaps, and partner with stakeholders throughout the company to accomplish long-term growth. The candidate should have experience leading a software development team, expert Python knowledge, familiarity with system design and maintenance, and a great understanding of the software development life cycle.

The Director of Engineering will be part of a mission-driven, booming company, with 200 employees. Responsibilities

  • Manages a team of 8-10 individuals of backend and frontend software engineers who develop enterprise applications and service APIs.
  • Provides architectural decision making for Python (Django), JavaScript/TypeScript (React) and SQL databases.
  • Provides strategic technical guidance and steering multifaceted aspects of design, integration, development, testing, and engineering support.
  • Contributes to and manages all aspects of the software development lifecycle.
  • Establishes feasibility of development, identify timelines, allocate resources, and ensure execution of development efforts.
  • Participates in supporting business growth, strategic planning, proposal drafting and presentations.
  • Oversees and refines engineering methodologies and procedures, emphasizing scalability and maintainability.
  • Ensures engineering processes and installations adhere to design specifications, operational standards, documentation and healthcare regulations.
  • Builds and promotes team culture and collaboration.
  • Mentors team and establishes individual goals and training, including performance metrics and capacity.
  • Contributes and approves engineering systems and patterns, including API development, Databases, Logging & Monitoring, AWS pipeline and services, etc.
  • Defines and enforces strong coding best practices, documentation, and standards throughout the team.
  • Guides and leads technical engineering and architecture discussions.
  • Collaborates with cross-departmental teams and stakeholders throughout the organization.
  • Supports healthcare-based security and compliance requirements.

 

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science is preferred
  • A minimum of six (6) years professional experience in software development
  • A minimum of two (2) years of team management experience
  • Expert knowledge of Python (Django preferred but not required) and API development and/or JavaScript
  • Knowledge of relational databases and SQL and intermediate experience designing and implementing system architecture
  • Experience with cloud architecture (AWS preferred but not required)
  • Healthcare experience (including EHRs), security best practices, infrastructure as code, observability, experience with data and reporting teams is highly preferred
