Job Summary/Basic Function

Observatory assistants perform multiple functions. They present star parties to visiting K-12 students and the public, create curriculum materials, and perform several other duties in connection with the outreach and education programs of the observatory.

The successful applicant will have taken (and performed well in!) ASTR 2040 (Principles of Observational Astronomy) or have equivalent telescope experience.

**This is a pooled position. Applicants are selected from the pool as positions become available. After a period of time, the pool will expire and applicants will be notified.

Required Qualifications

Must be a student at Weber State University.
Must have taken (and performed well in!) ASTR 2040 (Principles of Observational Astronomy) or have equivalent telescope experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in public speaking or speaking to groups preferred.

Physical Requirements of this position

Light work. Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Use of arm and/or leg controls requiring exertion of forces greater than sedentary wo, Medium work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Visual Acuity Requirements including color, depth perception and field of vision.

Required to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; using a computer terminal; extensive reading., Required to have visual acuity to determine the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of the work assigned (i.e., custodial, food services,) or to make general observations of facilities or structures (i.e., security guard, inspection)., Required to have visual acuity to perform activities such as: operating machines, (i.e. lathes, drill presses, power saws) where the job is at or within arm’s reach; skilled trades tasks of a non-repetitive nature, such as carpenter, plumber, mechanic.
