WBS, a subsidiary of WEC Energy Group, is seeking a Gas Buyer in our Milwaukee, Wisconsin location.
This position is part of a job family where expereince will be the determining factor.
Job Summary
The Gas Buyer is responsible for daily and monthly management of utility natural gas portfolios. This person must perform load forecasts, develop daily and monthly supply and trading strategies to meet demand with the lowest cost supply alternatives, find opportunities to realize value for un-utilized assets, nominate supply volumes to the pipelines and track all activity and usage information utilizing spreadsheets and/or systems. The Gas Buyer is also responsible for the short term management of liquefied natural gas, fuel oil and propane supply for the portfolio to include tracking all activity and usage information utilizing spreadsheets and/or systems for the applicable portfolio. The Gas Buyer is responsible for executing financial transactions for the financial hedging of commodity prices. This person will ensure that information is kept current and accurate throughout the month, to ensure proper records at month end. It is imperative that all activity comply with FERC, State Commissions, and Company rules and policies. The Gas Buyer will rotate between the portfolios on a set schedule. This position must work weekends and evening hours on a rotating basis.
Job Responsibilities
- Forecast daily LDC demand using forecasting models, graphical and statistical analysis. Use forecasts to balance supply to demand for current day as well as to plan supply strategies for next day. Requires Sense of Urgency and Personal Responsibility competencies as well as technical skills.
- Develop daily gas nominations plan and implement plan through actual nominations to pipelines, storage operators, point operators (i.e. LDCs) and suppliers in compliance with appropriate tariffs. Again requires Sense of Urgency competency to meet multiple daily deadlines, as well as Personal Responsibility due to the significance of gas costs.
- Work with other traders and schedulers representing gas suppliers, pipelines and storage operations, as well as internally with Power Operations, Gas Control, Storage Operations, and Gas Scheduling to ensure appropriate gas volumes are scheduled at delivery points.
- Document all transactions and reconcile with pipeline data in conjunction with Middle Office to ensure accurate and timely data is available for Accounting and Billing purposes.
- Develop daily (and monthly) buying, selling, and capacity release strategies by combining knowledge of supply needs and contractual rights with insights into the daily market. Implement trading strategies by negotiating monthly and daily trading (buying and selling) and/or capacity release. Financial Discipline and Customer Focus Competencies (internal customers and external trading partners) required.
- Work with Gas Supply Planning, Modeling, and Contracts to ensure proper utilization of contractual assets as well as to support reliability and cost goals by best managing storage inventories and other asset utilization.
- Execute financial transactions via broker to hedge financial price risk in accordance tactic & strategy. Fully comply with internal risk management guidelines such as credit limits, and provide timely reporting, to minimize financial risks to company. Understand and comply with State and Federal regulations that reflect our position as a regulated provider to our customers while still operating in a semi-deregulated environment.
- Maintain working knowledge of pipeline tariffs, services, and contracts.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Business, Engineering, or Related Area with 1-3 years of experience with commodity procurement or scheduling experience. 5-10 years equivalent natural gas buying/scheduling experience may be considered in lieu of a Bachelor's Degree.

- Sense of urgency and ability to handle stress to meet multiple daily deadlines
- Knowledge of gas markets and ability to develop rapport with Trading Partners over the phone
- Strong customer focus and attention to detail to properly support Accounting and Billing of Transactions
- Record of personal responsibility in handling assets with high economic value
- Ability to apply sound judgment under time pressure to operate within regulations and internal policies
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of financial risk management concepts
- Fundamental Knowledge of Gas and Electric Utility Systems
