Purpose:
Manager of New Product Development and Prototyping for thin gage precision metal products serving the Automotive, Medical, and Defense\Aerospace markets. This role includes management of the entire NPD process from quoting, protype process & tooling development, and delivery of parts. The ideal candidate will have extensive tooling and stamping experience (10 years) in precision sheet metal parts and assemblies, including tool design experience and direct interaction with customers for design collaboration. Must have relevant CAD experience in both 2D and 3D environments.
Position Functions:
- Design and coordination of prototype and product development activities for high-precision sheet metal stamped parts. This includes, but is not limited to development of protype processes, quoting & estimating, developing strip layouts, blanking and forming station layout, and management of suppliers for external processes. This position includes toolmaker and NPD engineering direct reports.
- Create and modify Material Specifications, Plating Specifications, Heat-Treat Specifications and other outside material/process specifications as required.
- Design of tooling, fixtures, gages and other custom tooling or equipment as required.
- Review customer drawings and specifications for manufacturing feasibility.
- Participate in Tooling Kickoff, Specification Review, Design Review, and Lessons Learned Meetings.
- Provide technical assistance to Tool Room regarding tooling and process issues during die fabrication and debugging.
- Responsible for adherence to tooling project schedules and budgets.
- Initiate and/or coordinate outsourced tooling work with qualified tooling subcontractors. Ensure accuracy, quality workmanship and on-time delivery of outsourced tooling components.
Knowledge / Skills / Experience required:
- Minimum of 15 years of experience in the design and build of progressive stamping dies and/or prototyping for complex, high precision stamped products. Min 5 years in supervisory or managerial role.
- 2-yr. technical degree required; 4-yr engineering degree preferred. Equivalent experience in a hands-on technical position, such as tool & die maker/apprentice, may be considered as a substitute for degree.
- Proficient in Computer-Aided Design (CAD). At a minimum, must be familiar with at least one 2-D
o CAD design package (eg. AutoCAD, Draftsight, etc.) and have working knowledge in 3-D design (eg. Solid Works, PTC Creo, etc).
- Understanding of ANSI/ISO drawing standards. Knowledge of GD&T dimensioning
- Demonstrated knowledge of metal stamping industry and practices
- In depth understanding of stamping and related manufacturing processes
- Knowledge of tool steels and their applications
- Experience with common stamped metals such as cold-rolled steels, stainless steels and copper-based alloys
- Understanding of die sensors, vision inspection, and/or related technology is preferable
- Knowledge of insert molding process desirable
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
- Exceptional analytical and computational skills
- Good verbal and written communication skills
