The Weld County Youth Conservation Corps AmeriCorps program operates out of Employment Services of Weld County in Greeley, Colorado. The primary focus of Crew members includes environmental stewardship, conservation/restoration practices, community improvement and engagement, and education advancement and exploration. Opportunities for participation exist on a year-round basis, offering youth entry-level experience in the form of a crew-based model.

Corps Member: Chainsaw Crew Member - Sawyer

Location: Employment Services of Weld County, Greeley, Colorado

AmeriCorps living allowance: $2,200 monthly living stipend, disbursement on the 15th and last day of the month.

Time Commitment: 40 hours/week, Monday – Friday 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

· Alternative schedules may be considered for project specific requirements and certain training opportunities.

Season Dates: April 1, 2024 – December 31st, 2024

AmeriCorps Benefits: County Holidays off, Chainsaw operator certification, First Aid/CPR/AED certification, student loan forbearance, $3,447.50 Segal Education Award following completion of 900-hour service.

Service Position Summary:

The chainsaw crew consists of young adults ages 16*-30 and provides entry level experience, technical training, and development of personal and professional skills. Crew members’ primary focus is on invasive tree species removal throughout Weld County, with additional community service opportunities taking place throughout members’ term of service. Personal/professional development provides training certificates, career exploration, experience in a team-based environment, effective communication, and basic skills development.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Invasive species and hazard tree removal as a sawyer and/or a swamper
  • Participate in a crew-based model
  • Promote a strong service ethic while encouraging the development of teambuilding, self-worth, conflict resolution, effective communication, goal setting, and decision making
  • Abide by WCYCC policies and procedures and maintain safety
  • Maintain a positive attitude and reflect strong service ethic

Ability To:

  • Serve in unpredictable weather and harsh environmental conditions
  • Communicate effectively with fellow corps members, crew leader, and program staff
  • Problem solve in a variety of settings
  • Demonstrate sound judgment/risk management skills
  • Service term may require attendance during the evenings and weekends as necessary (Camping for 2 weeks)

Qualifications:

MUST BE 16*- 30 YEARS OLD TO APPLY (*Obtained High School Diploma or HSED)

  • Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks and possess a valid state driver’s license or identification card
  • U.S. citizen, U.S. National, or lawful permanent resident
  • Received or on track to receive high school diploma or GED
  • Have reliable transportation to and from service base

Experience:

  • Serving in a team environment
  • Performing conservation-related service, or general labor tasks
  • Comfortable with power tools and serving in a hazardous environment

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Ability to use/handle picks, sledgehammers, rakes, and shovels
  • Ability to transverse uneven terrain
  • Ability to bend, stoop, stretch, twist, or to squat to perform tasks
  • Service term will require strenuous physical engagement, personal motivation, and perseverance

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $2,200.00 - $2,455.00 per month

Schedule:

  • 8 hour shift
  • Monday to Friday
