About the Role Program Overview The MBA Summer Internship is seeking highly motivated, first-year MBA students who plan to pursue a career in investing. The firm partners directly with our diversity partners to build a strong pipeline of underrepresented talent (women and people of color.) into the internship program. This 10-to-12-week summer internship is a paid, full-time opportunity starting in June 2023. Interns will be located at our Boston headquarters and will be offered a housing stipend along with a flexible working environment. There are three main components that make up the internship: 1. Getting to know our firm Through our summer program, you will experience first-hand our firm’s culture while interacting with and be exposed to seasoned investors throughout the Wellington organization. This exposure will help you build your network and discover what makes the Wellington experience unique. The internship will also offer exposure to our business networks (i.e., affinity groups). At Wellington we aspire to cultivate diversity of thought, diversity of culture and diversity of backgrounds, and our business networks are central to promoting that mission. 2. Immersion into the world of investing You will have the opportunity to develop and deepen your investment knowledge by conducting security research, attending company management meetings, accessing the firm’s proprietary research notes, and attending our daily investor Morning Meeting. You will experience an intellectually challenging and rewarding summer that should offer insight into the investment industry and into Wellington Management. 3.Mentorship and feedback You will receive training throughout the summer to develop and grow your investment acumen and help to shape a potential career in investment management. This will be through a combination of group meetings with investors and in-house training sessions covering advanced Excel modeling and FactSet or Bloomberg tutorials along with continued support through strong mentorship. MBA Summer interns will partner with more seasoned investors who will work alongside the Director of Early Career Investor Development to provide support and feedback. The summer internship experience is representative of what an investor would do on a full-time basis at Wellington, and successful interns will be actively considered for full-time investor opportunities beginning after their graduation. The Position Interns are hired into one of the following areas of our Investment Platform: Investment Research, Alternatives, and Investment Boutiques. Investment Research Investment research and applied research portfolios across asset classes and disciplines providing long-term superior performance driven by expertise, insight, and innovation. Department includes investment professionals working across multiple global offices focusing on fundamental research, macro, technical and ESG. Alternatives Multidisciplinary expertise in liquid alternatives and privates. The department strives to move from a marginal to a major powerhouse in liquid alternatives. The department consists of investment professionals across multiple global office locations. Alternatives offers both returns and diversification with return-seeking and risk mitigating products. Investment Boutiques Community of discrete investment teams across asset classes and disciplines, delivering exceptional investment returns for clients. Department consists of investment professionals across multiple global offices and investment teams. The department focuses on equities, fixed income, commodities and multi-asset. Within each group, you will be assigned an industry (or subset of an industry) to cover and are expected to formulate a fundamental understanding of the industry to prepare and present action-oriented investment recommendations based on analysis conducted during the summer. Specific projects and industries will be finalized closer to the start of the internship. Samples of responsibilities across all areas: Identifying, analyzing, and recommending investments to portfolio managers Creative collection of pertinent industry and company information Preparing detailed reports and developing financial models for companies researched Translation of analysis into actionable investment ideas Communication of investment thesis to firm’s investment professionals Formulation of a fundamental understanding of the competitive, operational, financial, and regulatory dynamics affecting an industry Strategic analysis of sub-sectors and companies as well as field work. Exposure to short positions and private investments in high growth areas Build strong trusting relationships internally with colleagues and externally with company management teams All the above will be presented with a highly challenging and rewarding experience that should offer insight to the investment management profession and to Wellington Management. Qualifications Successful candidates for the role possess the following: Undergraduate degree and currently enrolled in your first year of a two-year MBA program (Graduating in Spring 2024) Interest or relevant past experience in financial markets and investing; has a curiosity for the global markets, and in establishing their own process for researching and evaluating companies Strong interpersonal skills and experience in a collaborative, results-oriented environment; is energized by being an individual contributor within a collaborative team and embracing the benefits of overlapping lines of company coverage and idea generation across the Firm.
