Background
The Parents As Teachers program provides support and education in the home and other community environments to parents and their children (prenatal to age 5) who are at risk for child abuse and neglect using the Parents as Teachers and other approved curriculum. The Bilingual Parent Educator works in collaboration with service providers to reduce the need for the placement of children out of the home.

Responsibilities
1. Provides home visits to assigned families where children have been identified through program screening criteria as being “at risk” for abuse and/or neglect.
2. Makes home visits in the greater Waterbury region based on the needs of the family, minimally once per week per family or per family’s request
3. Provides families with information that includes, but is not limited to, child development, parenting, safety, immunizations and community resources.
4. Utilizes program-approved curriculum to improve parenting skills, increase understanding of normal child development, and how to advocate and access community resources and needed services.
5. Facilitates groups for parents using established curriculum and format.
6. Engages community providers, such as health care providers and early education centers, in recruitment of prenatal families and families with eligible aged children.
7. Assists and models to client in seeking additional services from community resources, makes referrals as appropriate
8. Maintains collaborative relationship with primary care provider and community services
9. Actively participates in supervision.
10. Immediately notifies supervisory staff of situations in which children may be at risk (i.e., physical abuse, sexual abuse, chronic neglect, unsafe home, etc) and/or any other sentinel event.
11. Maintains accurate record of all client contact (and collateral work) including service hours, number of home and office visits, contact with collateral agencies, travel time, office time and training hours.
12. Testifies in Court as needed.
Requirements
- Minimum Associates' degree in Human Services or related field required, plus 3 years of work experience required. Bachelors's Degree in Human Services, Social Work or related field is preferred.
- Experience working with children and families in crisis preferred.
- Knowledge of child abuse and neglect reporting criteria preferred.
- Good communication skills – written and verbal. Ability and willingness to work with families of all racial and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Bilingual ability required (includes fluency in the language, reading, writing, and comprehending), fluency in English/Spanish required.
Full-time position; 40 hours/week.
Pay rate: $20.19 per hour
Mileage reimbursement: .58/mile
