The Department of Geography & Planning prepares students for careers in a range of fields including urban and regional planning, geospatial technologies, environmental conservation, and more. Students in the program are equipped with the professional and technical skills needed to guide complex processes of a changing world, to utilize cutting edge technologies to create sustainable built and natural environments, and to enrich communities through leadership, entrepreneurial activity, social responsibility, and environmentally sustainable planning and policy. The department offers a BS in Urban and Environmental Planning, BS in Geography, Master of Urban and Regional Planning, and MS in Geography. The department is part of the College of Business & Public Management, a signatory of the UN’s Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) initiative.
Responsibilities include:
- Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in one or more of the following areas: Environmental Planning, Land Use Planning, Infrastructure/Public Works (including storm water management), Environmental Applications of GIS, and Planning for Public Services
- Directing Planning Studio and Student Research Projects
- Mentoring/Advising Students
- Maintaining an active scholarship and research agenda
- Serving the University and the community through participation in various committees.
The typical course load involves teaching four courses per semester.
- Ph.D. in Planning or related field or ABD and completion of degree within one year of appointment
- Teaching experience in planning or related field
- Experience with Environmental and Land use Planning, and with AICP or qualifications to earn AICP certification
- Established record of research in applying GIS to areas such as storm water management, environmental planning, infrastructure/public works, transportation, and health
- Experience in leading student research
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to departmental and college initiatives such as the PRME and WCU’s Center for GIS and Spatial Analysis
- Experience with reinforcing and developing community relationships and furthering community engagement through teaching, research, and service activities
