What are the responsibilities and job description for the Roofing Estimator position at WEST COAST ROOFING LLC?
West Coast Roofing is looking for a Roofing Estimator to provide and lead full-service estimating for large-scale and complex projects. Projects will be varied and span multiple types of roofing contracts. The estimator is responsible for preparing work to be estimated by gathering proposals, blueprints, specifications, and related documents. They will identify labor, material, and time requirements by studying proposals, blueprints, specifications, and related documents, compute costs by analyzing labor, material, and time requirements. The overall progress of the roofing jobs comes back to the Estimator and his/her decisions.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Understand the project/program and its requirements
- Determine key variables for cost and other estimates
- Gather first-hand information from sites, warehouses or other venues
- Conduct research to obtain data on labor costs, materials, production times etc.
- Use software for data analysis, forecasting and budgeting
- Obtain and review offers and quotes by subcontractors or vendors
- Perform risk analysis
- Create and submit estimate reports or bids to appropriate persons (project managers, clients, bidding competitions etc.)
- Build relationships with key vendors (subcontractors, suppliers, engineers etc.)
- Provide consultation on planning (schedules, manpower needs etc.)
- Estimate job costs and submit proposals for review
- Understand all processes of job from acquisition to fulfillment
- Review and approve invoices, material slips, purchase orders, contracts and proposals to ensure accuracy
- Responsible for all estimating duties, including but not limited to bids, pricing, ordering and change orders
- Attend pre-bid meetings and visit job sites
- Secure pricing from vendors
- Develop relationships with owners, contractors and suppliers
- Resolve disputes with clients in a timely manner
- Track labor and material costs of jobs
- Work closely with Service Department representatives, Operations and job Crew Leaders
- Additional duties as assigned
- Manage the roofing projects (scheduling, material orders, installations or repairs to residential and commercial properties) from start to finish including final walkthrough
Job Requirements and Expectations
- Control every stage of roofing from Lead Stage through Walk Through
- Use ExakTime to clock at inspections, job follow ups – enter address of location in notes
- Work 32 hours minimum a week.
- Check in at the office at least once per day
- Write estimates as defined in the Estimate Requirement handout

- Physical fitness – roofing personnel face many physical requirements, such as the ability to lift up to 75 pounds of heavy materials and tools and the ability to withstand extensive bending, kneeling, and walking in hot and cold weather
- Balance is crucial to the job and a roofer's safety.
- Strength: Roofing personnel need to be able to carry heavy materials, like bundles of shingles, up ladders and onto roofs.
- Stamina: Roofing personnel spend most of their day on their feet outside, sometimes during intense heat or cold.
Ideal candidates
- At Least 2-year experience as estimator or similar position
- 1-year experience in the construction industry (preferably roofing)
- Familiarity with financial and project management principles
- In depth knowledge of research and data analysis methods and estimation formulas
- Exquisite math and IT ability with an analytical mindset
- Proficient in relevant software
- Outstanding communication and negotiation abilities
- Thoroughness and reliability
- Excellent organizational skills
- Must have roofing experience
- High School Diploma, Bachelor’s Degree preferred
- High level of problem-solving ability, with a strong emphasis on managing difficult customers
- Proficiency with MS Office, computer and smart phone savvy.
- Superior communication and time management skills
- Working knowledge of mechanical drawings, with the ability to read specifications and plans
- Ability to handle a variety of duties with minimal supervision
