Description

Assists other technicians in completing field and office work such as inventories, surveys, inspections, and other duties as assigned. Assigned tasks may be performed in the field, or in an office. Actions and decisions are administered under well-established guidelines and are closely monitored by a direct supervisor.


Starting Pay: $23.63 based on minimum qualifications

Pay Range: $23.63 - $33.87 depending on additional education and/or experience

Schedule: 4 x 10-hour shifts, Monday - Thursday

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Execute assigned tasks in a safe manner, able to identify and report potential safety hazards.
  • Makes accurate records of activities in the Engineering Division, including daily diary reports.
  • Enforces city code and Engineering Division construction standards, including the issuance of Stop Work Orders and citations.
  • Operates city equipment and vehicles in a safe and professional manner.
  • Ability to discern/resolve problems with residents and others on construction projects in a timely manner.
  • General knowledge of division programs, objectives, or processes.
  • Inventories and surveys public works projects and infrastructure.
  • Performs construction field tests on soils, concrete and asphalt.
  • Blue stakes City owned storm drain system.

Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The minimum requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

  • Ability to understand basic principles, theories and practices of engineering and construction.
  • Ability to gather and compile information and write concise reports.
  • Ability to understand and apply city codes and Engineering Division Construction Standards.
  • Ability to document construction activities electronically.
  • Basic understanding of construction material properties and principles for proper placement.
  • The basic ability to read and interpret construction plans.
  • Ability to learn various software programs related to job duties.

Personal Skills

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, and the general public.
  • Must be able to react to change productively and manage other tasks as assigned.
  • Ability to receive feedback on performance with a positive attitude, and willingness to suggest ideas to supervisor to improve procedures.
  • Willingness to discern/resolve problems with residents and others on construction projects.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or G.E.D certificate.
  • Current Utah Driver's License

The following education and experience may be considered for additional pay:

  • Experience in construction or engineering activities.
  • An associate's degree in civil engineering, surveying, construction management, GIS or department approved equivalent.
  • Possession of an accredited GIS Professional Certificate
  • Possession of a Professional Land Surveyor License
  • UDOT Environmental Control Supervisor
  • UDOT Inspector Training Level I
  • UDOT ADA Pedestrian Ramp Training Course
  • ACI Concrete Testing Technician
  • OSHA 10 Certification
  • RSI Certification
  • UDOT Inspector Training Level 2
  • UDOT Inspector Training Level 3
  • ATSSA Traffic Control Certification
  • APWA Certified Public Infrastructure Inspector CPII

Physical Demands

  • Moderate to heavy physical activity.
  • Must be able to lift items that may weigh up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to move easily around construction sites.

Work Environment

  • A combination of office and field work.
  • Daily interaction with the public who may or may not speak English.
  • Intermittent exposure to stressful situations.
  • Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and evenings to meet job schedules and deadlines.
  • Work environment may include muddy, wet, or dusty conditions, and extreme weather conditions.
  • May be required to safely enter confined spaces.
