Employee will be assigned to the Executive Office, Environmental Advocate, Environmental Youth Program. Under general supervision, at the full performance level, will be responsible for the promotion, coordination and maintenance of various volunteer-based environmental programs administered through the Department of Environmental Protection in the following counties: Clay, Fayette, Greenbrier, McDowell, Mercer, Monroe, Raleigh, Summers and Wyoming.

The Youth Environmental Program - will conduct meetings, presentations, setting up displays, making contact and scheduling visits to schools, extension offices, scout councils and other relative youth organizations to increase program enrollment.
Duties include connecting youth groups with local resources, attending and participating in the Annual Youth Environmental Day, Junior Conservation Camp, and Youth Environmental Conference. Will encourage youth group to submit project reports in order to become eligible for more than eleven thousand dollars in awards for environmental projects that benefit com munities. Will work to increase the number of youth groups participating in the program, replacing group cancellations and increasing the number of reports submitted.
Rehabilitation Environmental Action Plan (REAP) Adopt-A-Highway - employee will
distribute brochures and other cleanup materials, conducting presentations for volunteer groups, providing media coverage during the spring and fall clean ups, attending the annual volunteer appreciation day, reviewing monthly statistical reports, maintaining/managing the groups participating in the program to ensure compliance with program requirements and current policy and promoting participation in the Adopt-A-Spot program with age-appropriate groups. Will work to increase the number of volunteer groups in the program, replacing group cancellations and participating with a group during the Spring and Fall cleanups.
REAP recycling program - employee will promote the availability of regional recycling services, distribute promotional materials and grant information. Focusing efforts on schools applying for recycling grants, conducting presentations and participating in local recycling events. Will promote participation in the West Virginia sustainable schools initiative with college students. Research recycling, litter control and e-cycling grant guidelines; assist in setting up/ expanding a recycling program in at least one local outlet every year such as a school, park, recreation center, library, local government office, business, etc.
REAP Make It Shine Program - will promote participation in the statewide cleanup held each Spring by distributing applications to volunteer groups; distribute promotional materials and establishing/maintaining communication with volunteer groups to ensure appropriate site selection and follow through to completion with the cleanup project including the submission of the cleanup report statistics. The goal for the Make It Shine Program is to have at least one volunteer group per county participating in the statewide cleanup. Have familiarity with program guidelines, research state litter laws and relay information to volunteer groups.
REAP Operation Wildflower Program - employee will promote participation by distributing brochures and other information for donating an acre or half acre plot for planting and identifying signs that need repaired/replaced.

Education and outreach; attend one conference/training session each year in addition to mandatory training; and conduct, arrange and/or participate in two media events per year such as talk radio, news releases, tv appearance, newspaper articles, etc. Will participate in other environmental and natural resources outreach initiatives such as Project Learning Tree, Project Wet, Project Wild, and Save Our Streams. Employee will perform other duties as assigned. Must have the ability to communicate easily and clearly, both orally and in writing. Public speaking experience is desired for this position. Knowledge of technical procedures used in writing and editing.
Ideal applicant would have experience working with children and volunteers; knowledge of environmental programs administered through DEP.
Note: Regular attendance is an essential part of this position.
Note: This position requires travel, thus must have a valid driver's license. The recommended candidate will be subject to a search of his or her Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) prior to being hired and annually thereafter or as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Training: Bachelors degree from a regionally accredited four year college or university with a major in communications, fine arts, journalism, graphic design, marketing, public relations, English or related field.

Substitution: Full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in a field of public information dissemination may substitute for above training on a year-for-year basis.
Experience: One year of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in a public information dissemination field.
