Additional Job Description:

West Virginia University Medicine seeks an Associate Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Medical Affairs (ACMO/VPMA) of WVU Hospitals. The physician leader in this role acts as a liaison between the medical staff, clinical departments, the Chief Medical Officer, and the Executive Leadership Team, and coordinates this inter-relationship in the pursuit of the highest appropriate levels of medical care. The ACMO/VPMA is responsible for the effective discharge of medical staff organizational functions as set forth in the medical staff bylaws and policies developed by the Medical Executive Committee and will keep the Chief Medical Officer apprised of all issues regarding the medical staff. This position is expected to require 40% effort.

Core Duties and Responsibilities: The statements described here are intended to describe the general nature of work being performed by people assigned to this position. 1. Direct involvement in and oversight responsibility for physician/provider services, medical staff applications, credentialing, re-credentialing, peer review, provider professionalism, provider engagement/alignment and new physician orientation.

2. Coordinates and participates in the development and revision of bylaws, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations in compliance with regulatory bodies and accrediting standards.

3. Monitors medical staff compliance with bylaws, rules and regulations and assures that problems are properly addressed and reported to appropriate officers, department chairs and/or medical committees.

4. Oversees conduct of The Joint Commission requirements on Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation (OPPE) and Focused Professional Practice Evaluation (FPPE).

5. Oversees and focuses the work of medical directors and assists in developing quality improvement goals for each director's medical focus.

6. Works collaboratively with the clinical department Chairs, Medical Staff Officers, the Legal Department and Human Resources to oversee medical staff professionalism, behavior, and discipline.

7. Serves on the hospital Medical Executive Committee as an ex officio non-voting member.

8. Serves as a non-voting ex officio member of the Quality and Patient Safety Subcommittee of the WVU Hospitals Board of Directors.

9. Works with patient advocates on grievances that relate to medical staff. Oversight of the follow-up related to OPPE/FPPE with grievances for credentialed providers.

10. Keeps the Chief Medical Officer apprised of issues involving the medical staff.

11. Other duties as assigned by the Chief Medical Officer.

12. Maintains a clinical practice within his/her specialty as a member of the faculty of the WVU School of Medicine.

Minimum Education, Certification, Licensure, and Experience:

  • Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from an accredited medical school
  • Certified by a board of the American Board of Medical Specialties or the American Osteopathic Association
  • Hold or able to obtain medical licensure in the State of West Virginia by start date
  • At least ten (10) years of clinical practice experience and a minimum of three (3) years administrative experience
  • Administrative and clinical experience in an academic medical center.

Preferred Education, Certification, Licensure, and Experience:

  • MBA or graduate degree in healthcare administration.
  • Leadership role in an academic medical center.
