    Job Title: Dean of Students - Long Term Substitute - 23-24 School year only
    Location: Westerly high School

    Class Title: Temporary - Exempt/Non Exempt - Union if applicable>
    Effective Date: 10/26/2023

    Salary Range: $ 49,450.80 - $ 89,335.82 - Benefits Eligible
    Hours per week: Full Time


    General Statement: The duties commonly associated with this position, including (but not exclusive of others) the following duties, which s/he performs directly or through the proper delegation of authority, within the framework of the general laws of the State of Rhode Island, the regulations of the State Department of Education, the policies and rules of Westerly Public Schools and the terms of the contract with the Westerly Teachers’ Association all of which s/he is expected to be familiar.
    Responsibilities:
    • Manages student supervision issues and enforces school behavioral expectations.
    • Upholds the district’s student conduct code.
      • Monitors attendance and employment laws.
      • Develops and/or updates administrative procedures to comply with legal mandates.
      • Helps update and distribute student/parent and teacher handbooks.
      • Counsels students to acknowledge and manage responsible personal conduct.
      • Helps resolve problems that impede student learning and/or participation in school activities.
      • Establishes and communicates progressive discipline policies and interventions to address student behaviors.
    • Maintains visibility. Promotes a favorable image of the school district. Builds community partnerships that enhance district programs and services.
    • Collaborates with the Senior Counselor to create Senior/Freshmen mentor/advisee program
    • Collaborates with the School Resource Officer to conduct investigations and take appropriate action
    • Collaborates with the Freshman Facilitator to plan and execute appropriate induction of new 9th grade students
    • Collaborates with the Counseling and Office staff to ensure all new students are appropriately welcomed and advised of school expectations
    • Helps supervise student activities as directed (e.g., arrivals/departures, parking lots, lunch periods, hall duty, extracurricular programs, etc.).
    • Collaborates with the Advisory Coordinator to develop age appropriate materials that focus on development of success skills.
    • Assists teachers with effective classroom management strategies
    • Upholds School Committee policies and follows administrative procedures.
      • Counsels students and parents about school and district policies.
      • Assists staff and parents in developing student behavioral expectations.
      • Counsels students to acknowledge and manage responsible personal conduct. Helps resolve problems that impede student learning and/or participation in school activities.
      • Verifies legal residences.
    • Assists in the planning, developing and implementing of individual student behavior plans
    • Serves as a resource to staff in dealing with classroom management issues
    • Assists in developing school-wide programs to promote positive student behavior as well as interventions
    • Collaborates with Administration and Counseling to coordinate alternative education placement for students.
    • Intervene to avert problem situations and resolve conflicts.
    • Maintain an acceptable attendance record and be punctual.
    • Work with parents as partners.
    • Confers appropriate consequences for behavior including but not limited to detention, in school suspension, and out of school suspension
    • Supports a full range of educational options. Works with intervention assistance teams (IAT).
      • Reviews IEP’s and collaborates with special educators to positively impact student behavior;
      • Ensures all teachers of IEP students have knowledge of and implement behavior plans
    • Collaborates with staff to develop and lead a student tribunal process
    • Collaborates with staff to develop and implement a peer mediation program
    • Collaborates with the lead ESL Counselor to ensure non-English speaking students are appropriately welcomed and inducted
    • Communicates with parents at all times regarding student behavior and attendance issues:
      • Helps parents and students understand attendance and behavioral requirements,
      • Assists in the writing of grants that are related to student management opportunities,
      • Prepares a warning letter outlining the consequences of continued truancy and/or misconduct.
    • Collaborates with Administration and Guidance to develop appropriate drug and alcohol intervention and intervention strategies
    • Provide supervision at extra-curricular and athletic events as needed
    • Develops positive recognition programs to reinforce a positive school climate
    • Collaborates with the Technology Department to provide school climate and discipline data
    • Accepts personal responsibility for decisions and conduct:
      • Participates in activities that advance district goals
      • Strives to develop rapport and serves as a positive role model for others
      • Participates in professional growth opportunities
    • Other related duties as assigned.
    Qualifications:
    • Experience:
      • 3 years of experience is preferred.
    • Education:
      • Bachelor’s Degree required.
    • Certification & Licensing:
      • Must meet the current RI Department of Education requirements and or certifications.
