Western Colorado Regional Dispatch Center or WestCO is hiring an Emergency Communications Specialist (ECS). The ECS is the first point of contact with the public via the 911 and non-emergency telephone lines. The Western Colorado Regional Dispatch center operates 24/7 365 as the primary EMS dispatcher for 16 different partners throughout Ouray, Mesa, Gunnison, San Miguel, and Montrose County.

The Wage: The wage for this position is $22.91/hour wage increases to $24.07/hour after one year of service and successful completion of training. In addition, this position is eligible for a hiring and retention bonuses totaling $3,000.00 ($1,500 on the first check and $1,500 after completing of training).

Essential Functions:

This position will, under the general direction of the Executive Director and Supervisors, act as the primary contact for dispatch services. Duties include:

  • Answering emergency and non-emergency voice calls and text messages, taking calls, and simultaneously entering information into a computer using a computer-style keyboard and computer-aided dispatch system.
  • Using information provided to determine the nature of a call and determine the appropriate response, to be able to dispatch, via radio console, the appropriate response units to the scene according to priority and availability of field units.
  • Retrieving and accurately relaying information contained in the State and National Criminal Justice Information Systems to law enforcement field units and entering and maintaining law enforcement and first responder data in the appropriate computer systems.

Job Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Minimum qualifications include: a high school diploma/GED, strong communication and decision-making skills with the ability to make good judgment choices, and demonstrated consistent ability to interact with many types of people and detach from the caller’s emotions while projecting an image of empathy. Dependability, high quality and accurate work, and a professional attitude are musts.
  • Desired qualifications include: a Bachelor’s degree, one year of relevant experience, current and valid EMD and CCIC/NCIC experience.
