Facilities Assistant

Part Time: 16 hours weekly

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Facilities Assistant is a hands-on position which works independently and with other museum staff, vendors, volunteers, and property lessee to keep the buildings, grounds, and exhibits ready for guests, safe, clean, and properly maintained. Position reports to the Deputy Director.

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs routine preventative maintenance of museum, grounds, and leased facilities.
  • Example of duties: carpentry, plumbing repairs, changing light fixtures, floor buffing, moving furniture, exhibits, and artifacts, and backup cleaning.
  • Works with others to setup, breakdown, and maintain on-site and mobile museum exhibits.
  • Assists in maintenance and repair of utilities and systems.
  • Assists other staff with completing larger projects.
  • May inspect facilities for high standards of appearance, safety, and readiness.
  • Completes all projects and duties timely, professionally, and safely.
  • Reports to supervisor on all facility, security, and safety issues.
  • Safely operates tools and equipment such as hand and power tools, scissor lift, fork lift, and bobcat.
  • Supports events, programs, fundraisers, and other property uses through setup, breakdown, and cleaning.
  • Other duties as assigned

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Must be able to physically complete all job duties using tools and machinery.
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience involving general maintenance of industrial and/or commercial facilities.
  • Experience with and knowledge of electrical, plumbing, carpentry, general maintenance, and custodial.
  • Physical dexterity required to access remote and confined spaces (roof, ceiling crawl spaces, etc.), climb ladders, work from heights, and to lift and move items of various weights and sizes safely.
  • Possess Class C California driver's license with a clean driving record and have the ability to operate motor vehicles in relation to work duties.
  • Computer skills including email communications and internet searches.
  • Adaptability and flexibility in response to changing conditions or work demands.
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to relate and communicate to all levels of the WSC community.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • Organized and self-motivated.
  • Ability to work flexible hours including week days, and occasional weekends and evenings.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills in the English language.
  • Sensitivity to and respect for works of art, cultural artifacts, and natural history specimens.
  • Be willing to learn.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States.

Preferred knowledge, skills, and/or abilities:

  • Bilingual in Spanish
  • General knowledge of scissor and fork lifts
  • Experience in towing a trailer

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical demands may include the ability to lift, drag, and push up to 50 pounds and occasionally heavier items. Position requires sitting, standing, walking, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, stooping, grasping, fine coordination, talking, hearing, and reaching using feet, legs, back, arms and hands in the performance of daily duties. Additionally, the incumbent will be working in all weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold. The position will occasionally require climbing and working from heights. May use chemicals, lubricants, and pesticides. Specific vision requirements include the ability to use close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The team member will be required to work at a personal computer. Must possess the ability to detect auditory and/or visual alarms.
