POSITION OVERVIEW: Create, manage and participate in a variety of learning environments and activities that provide opportunities for students to develop to their fullest potential and achieve their learning objectives. Participate collaboratively and professionally with other faculty and staff to promote the general well-being of the department and the college and of the collective and individual interests of its staff and student body. Support and seek always to fulfill the guiding concepts for the college embodied in the philosophy, mission, values and vision adopted by the college.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Provide for the safety of students and co-workers. Always attend to a safety hazard or potential safety hazard immediately. Assume responsibility for the orderliness of the learning environment and in the appropriate and safe use of instructional facilities and equipment.
  2. Class preparation: Takes time each day to prepare lesson material. Possess thorough understanding of course material and follow the lesson plans. Prepare in advance to see that students have sufficient materials and equipment to complete all classes and lab assignments.
  3. Instructional training: Implements instructional training techniques at the classroom. Is effective in generating classroom participation through question asking, student presentations and group exercises. Correlate class lesson to shop/lab lesson.
  4. Student retention: Identifies all "at risk" students (attendance, academics, and conduct related), and takes a proactive role in assisting "at-risk" students with tutoring, encouragement and working with the Program Director, Student Services Coordinator and Student Retention Specialist in order to keep them in school.
  5. Continuing education: Seeks to constantly improve teaching skills and techniques through different personal improvement avenues. Maintains competency and currency in the subject matter of courses taught and in teaching skills.
  6. Attendance: Take roll call twice a schedule, post attendance on the instructor portal, and turn in class rosters at the end of every class.
  7. Classroom management: Maintain an orderly classroom at all times, and control over students behavior at all times and does not allow students to disrupt the learning environment.
  8. Listen to students and co-workers in an effort to resolve conflicts and establish good communication.
  9. Understand, follow and enforce school rules, policies and procedures.
  10. Supervise classroom clean-up by students.
  11. Turnaround/Feedback on Course Content: Instructors respond within 24 hours, Monday through Sunday on course assignments such as lecture topics, discussion boards, on-line assignments, uploaded assignments, and outside work. (We can evaluate this component by reviewing Canvas’ email correspondence).
  12. Office/Virtual Office Hours: Instructor is available to meet with students during office hours on campus and during virtual office hours on-line. Office hours and Virtual office hours are posted in Canvas and documented in course syllabus. (We can evaluate this component by reviewing Canvas).
  13. Chat Hours (Chat Sessions)- Instructor scheduled at minimum three chat sessions per week with class. Chat Hours are designed to briefly discuss topics of the week and for a questions & answer session to clarify or reiterate topics covered during the F2F lectures. (We can evaluate this component by reviewing the Chat History for each course).
  14. Effective on-line communication- Instructors need to communicate professionally at all times and when providing feedback on discussion boards to each student, it must be constructive and provoke critical thinking in order to have ongoing “thread” of discussions with students in the class. “Great job”, “Awesome Answer”, “Superb”, “Nice” are not taught provoking responses.
  15. Perform other work-related duties that are assigned.

Requirements

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Those teaching general education courses in an AAS degree program must have, at a minimum, a Master’s degree, with appropriate academic coursework and preparation in the subject areas taught.
  2. Those teaching general education courses in an AOS degree program must have, at minimum, a Bachelor’s degree with appropriate academic coursework and preparation in the subject areas taught.
  3. For both degree programs, a minimum of 15 semester credit hours (or the equivalent) in the area of Math.
  4. Teaching experience at the post-secondary level.
  5. Faculty teaching any hybrid distance education courses, or in any of the hybrid programs must demonstrate proficiency in operating computer programs as Word and Excel.
  6. Prior teaching experience in distance education instruction is a plus but not mandatory.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  1. Must possess good presentation skills and ability to speak in public.
  2. Strong verbal and written communication skills, plus analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
  3. Proficient computer skills.
  4. Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English fluently.
  5. Must be customer service oriented.
  6. Ability and willingness to comply with school policies and procedures.
  7. Ability to evaluate objectively, fairly, and consistently.
  8. Creativity and initiative.
  9. Ability to correctly use and demonstrate all regular equipment and tools within the subject field.
  10. Must have a valid driver’s license and minimum legal insurance coverage on a personal vehicle.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
