Post Doctorate Research Assistant

The SMATE Program supports Western's mission to bring together individuals of diverse backgrounds and perspectives in a collaborative learning environment that supports the success of all students in STEM disciplines. SMATE includes 12 faculty members with joint appointments in Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Geology, Computer Science, and the Woodring College of Education, plus 2 other staff and several STEM Education research associates and instructors. SMATE faculty and staff work collaboratively to support undergraduate and K-12 teaching and research. SMATE offers interdisciplinary B.A. degree programs for future elementary teachers and coursework in STEM education to support several other elementary, middle, and high school teacher preparation programs. SMATE has an established history of leading and supporting innovative and systemic science education reform efforts in Washington State and the nation.

• Collaborate with elementary teachers and district personnel, community partners, and tribal communities.
• Collaborate on data collection and analyses and have opportunities to present at professional conferences and publish in peer-reviewed publications.
• Co-facilitate professional development experiences with teachers and preservice teachers.
• Apprentice in project organization including participating in community co-design meetings; attending project team meetings, preparing annual reports to stakeholders and funders, and implementing broader impacts and dissemination plans

• Doctoral degree in Education, Indigenous Studies, Learning Sciences or other STEM education field (PhD, EdD, or other terminal degree with degree conferral by time of appointment)
• Demonstrated research skill set (qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods)
• Publication or presentation experience with research and practitioner audiences
• Experience or demonstrated interest in elementary science education, culturally responsive instruction, and teacher education/professional development
• Experience working with diverse communities and stakeholders
• Ability to complete a variety of complex tasks independently, including collecting and analyzing empirical data

• Experience in K12 settings (as a teacher and/or researcher)
• Experience working in research practice partnerships
• Experience with qualitative research involving video analysis preferred

Salary

Position salary is $66,996. Salary increases will be provided in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement, including a 4.5% increase effective September 16, 2024.
