Shear and Brake Assistant

Position Overview

The purpose of this position is to operate shear and press brake machines to close tolerances in a metal production environment.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities

• Works to supply products and services that meet or exceed the customers’ expectations. Follows the documented quality systems and processes that are continually being improved to satisfy our customers’ needs.
• Set up and operate shear and press brake machines in accordance with established procedures and guidelines.
• Transport materials to or from storage or worksites to designated area using an overhead crane, forklift, or another device.
• Read and interpret blueprints and diagrams to shear the plate to size and form per customer drawings.
• Adjust machine setting to complete tasks according to specification, accurately, and in a timely fashion.
• Lay out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straightedges, tape measures, and rulers.
• Examine completed work pieces for defects such as chipped edges and marred surfaces, and sort defective pieces according to the types of flaws.
• Measure completed work pieces to verify conformance to specifications, using micrometers, gauges, templates, or rulers.
• Position, align, and secure work pieces against fixtures or stops on machine beds or on dyes.
• Attaches identifying tags or labels to materials or marks information on cases, bales, or other containers.
• May assist Production Control Manager or other Supervisors in other duties or special projects as needed.

• Production and Processing: Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of goods.
• Mathematics: Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and their applications.
• Mechanical: Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
• Controlling Machines and Processes: Using either control mechanisms or direct physical activity to operate machines or processes.
• Handling and Moving Objects: Using hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials, and manipulating things.
• Safety and Security; Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective safety for the protection of people and property.
• Inspecting Equipment, Structures, or Material: Inspecting equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.
• Performing General Physical Activities: Performing physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, bending and handling of materials.
• Judging the Qualities of Things, Services, or People: Assessing the value, importance, or quality of materials or people.
• Documenting/Recording Information: Entering, transcribing, recording, storing, or maintaining information in written or electronic form.
• Tools: Personal protective equipment (hardhats, safety glasses, steel toed boots, etc.), overhead crane, forklift, and calculator.
• Technology: CNC module on break machine.

Qualifications

• This particular position requires the individual to have a high school diploma or general education degree (GED); 6 months’ previous work-related experience; or a combination of education and experience.

Preferences

• Prior overhead crane and forklift experience.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Working Environment and Conditions

• Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to reach with hands and arms, and be able to communicate verbally and in writing and take direction. The employee is frequently required to be in a stationary position, move about the buildings, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The individual will frequently operate heavy machinery and use eye-hand coordination. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. Occasionally overtime can be expected during busy periods.
