Responsibilities:
We are currently seeking an entry-level Signal Field Support Technician to be part of our Rail team in Raleigh, NC.

- Assists in determining quality of construction and adequacy of safety improvements for railroad-highway grade crossing signal systems statewide. This includes evaluation of design criteria for application in field inspection of newly constructed railroad-highway grade crossing signal systems. This position accepts or rejects newly constructed or updated rail crossing signals, in accordance with state and federal standards.
- Assists in statewide railroad-highway grade crossing maintenance data collection and management systems and techniques to provide adequate oversight for NCDOT’s $2 million annual rail crossing signal maintenance expenditures.
- Assists in coordination of railroad and state or municipal force construction activities for approximately 50 railroad crossing safety projects each year statewide.
- Provides review and approval of invoices for statewide railroad-highway grade crossing signal construction submitted by railroad and/or their contractors to determine acceptability for payment.
- Following construction inspection, provides field collection of railroad-highway grade crossing inventory data, in accordance with Federal Railroad Administration and NCDOT requirements.
- In conjunction with appropriate Division of Highways, Rail Division, and federal and university units, tests and evaluates new and emerging rail crossing signal technologies and methodologies.
- Provides specialized expertise regarding railroad-highway grade crossing signals as they occur on roadway construction and improvement projects throughout North Carolina.
- Documents results of construction inspections, maintenance evaluations, and review of invoices as engineering and legal reporting of safety project activities.
- Provides responsive action under NCDOT’s customer service policy to comments and complaints regarding improper operation of railroad crossing signals.
- Undertakes special projects under the direction of the Crossing Project Engineers, and the Rail Signals Manager to resolve issues and problems involving railroads, usually in cooperation with other concerned agencies. Provides reports as requested. Undertakes other various rail-related projects as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED
- 2-5 years experience with dealing with the public and working with a team
- valid drivers licence
- proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel.
