Job Description
TITLE: Business Manager
GRADE : Exempted; Salary Position
REPORTS TO: President
DATE: January 1, 2024
HOURS: 30 hours per week
DAYS: Monday - Friday
POSITION SUMMARY:
Whittier IPA, Inc. consists of over 200 physicians and advanced practitioners in the Merrimack Valley, who are affiliated for the purpose of contracting with health plans and delivering coordinated care to patients.
The Business Manager is responsible for day to day operations of the organization including, staff oversight, operating budget, health plan contract performance.
Must possess the ability to work independently with strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills to support the management of multiple priorities, at multiple locations, with significant attention to detail for completion of both verbal and written external communications.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Operations
- Develop annual operating budget
- Oversight of staff policy and human resource issues
- Create value added services for physicians and office staff (i.e. IT support, supply chain discounts through Yankee Alliance, etc.)
- Report to and take direction from the Board of Directors
- Work with the President and Medical Director to prepare Board meeting materials and presentations
- Prepare and report all finances to the Board of Directors
- Monitor budget variances and report any budget discrepancies
Health Plan Contract Performance
- Monitor, analyses, and communicate contract performance to the physicians and Board of Directors
- Collaborate with Beth Israel Lahey Health Performance Network, Physicians Performance LLC, and Anna Jaques Hospital to create systems and resources for improving contract and quality performance
- Participate in all committee meetings related to Whittier IPA
- Work with the Medical Director and other IPA leadership on suggested best practice protocols and clinical pathways
- Create and make operational systems for physician practices to succeed at improving quality performance and patient satisfaction scores
Other
- Maintain collaborative team relationships with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the working group's achievement of goals, and to help foster a positive work environment
- Perform other similar and related duties as required or directed

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
- Strong organizational skills
- Possesses excellent verbal and written communication skills

- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including customer service skills
- Understand and comply with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) pertaining to protected health information
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/LICENSURE/TECHNICAL/OTHER:
- Education: Bachelor or Master's degree
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years' experience in healthcare, with a minimum of three years of substantial responsibility for complex data analysis in a managed care environment
- Qualifications:
- Requires understanding of healthcare delivery systems; solid knowledge of all managed care products, physician referral arrangements; manage care processes, financial risk models; severity adjustment models; utilization management procedures; cost and quality tiering models; and pay for performance models
- Experience with Health Information Technology
- Demonstrates extensive knowledge of healthcare reimbursement, including hospital and provider billing and coding, reimbursement methodologies and plan payment policies
- Expertise in Microsoft Office applications
