What are the responsibilities and job description for the Emergency Communications Specialist position at Wichita State University?
Transmits and receives law enforcement and public safety staff communications in accordance with government regulations. Monitors, documents and reports all activities as required. Communicates information and services with general public.
Answers incoming communications for all emergency and non-emergency calls, and maintains control of conversations prior to emergency response team arrival. Determines appropriate level of emergency response services based on available information and applicable laws and regulations. Communicates general law enforcement information, University policies, parking regulations, weather conditions, and public record releases.
Transmits or communicates information to appropriate emergency staff, agencies and communication systems utilizing appropriate terms and effective response techniques. Acts as emergency information and security backup according to required regulations.
Maintains accurate law enforcement records, incident documentation, and officer location and activity status in accordance with federal, state and local laws, regulations, and University policy.
Receives and responds to emergency communications during and after disaster incidents and other extreme conditions. Monitors and efficiently responds to security alarms and other emergency notifications. Receives and relays requests for emergency repairs and maintenance utilizing appropriate resources.
Processes law enforcement requests to check for warrants, driver status, previous convictions and criminal history.

Ability to communicate effectively, both verbal and written forms
Ability to pass a typing test
Ability to be trained to coordinate emergency response(s) for evolving situations
Excellent interpersonal skills
Basic knowledge of police and emergency response operations
Must possess valid driver’s license
Kansas Criminal Justice Information System (KCJIS) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certifications within six (6) months of hire date
