Unit Mission Statement
The Office of Strategic Cultural Partnerships at William & Mary builds new and enhances existing cultural assets and collaborations. Through effective coordination and communication, this unit identifies and promotes opportunities to sustain and reinterpret William & Mary’s historical and cultural resources, increase the visibility and impact of the university’s cultural projects and programs, and advance the priorities of these initiatives at the local, state, national, and international levels.
Position Summary
Strategic Cultural Partnerships seeks to advance research and community engagement related to the re-discovered Bray School structure and history and to other William & Mary cultural and historic assets and partnerships, ultimately striving to create a more complex, nuanced and inclusive story of our nation’s founding. Reporting to the Director of the William & Mary Bray School Lab, the Oral Historian will:
- Capture the Bray School’s legacy by interviewing descendant community members, restoration specialists, exhibit designers, and members of the Williamsburg Bray School Board, Advisory Council, and National Impact Committee
- Help record and disseminate the story of the Williamsburg Bray School, document public perspectives on the re-siting and restoration of the original Williamsburg Bray School
- Capture history, legacy, and impact related to other university cultural and historical resources under Strategic Cultural Partnerships, Work with the Bray School Lab Director and other Strategic Cultural Partnership staff to ensure these original materials are widely accessible to a broad audience through open access portals
- Represent the Bray School Lab and Strategic Cultural Partnerships at various institutional and public-facing programs and events
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in American Studies, African American Studies, History, Public History, Communications, or related field
- Demonstrated knowledge and skill in ethical and legal facets of oral history work to include informed consent, personal releases, etc.
- Demonstrated experience in the creation and preservation of oral histories, to include recording, editing, and transcription
- Excellence in oral and written communication for a range of audiences
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in the work of Strategic Cultural Partnerships
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree American Studies, African American Studies, History, Public History, Communications, or related field—or equivalent combination of bachelor’s degree and professional experience
- Proven success in the research, creation, preservation, and dissemination of advanced oral history work
- Member of a professional oral history association
Advertised Pay Range
Up to $65,000 commensurate with experience

This position will require hours beyond the typical work week, to include occasional evenings and weekends as needed for public-facing events and community engagement. This position may require in-state and out-of-state travel for research.
