Description

Role Summary:

The role of Wilson Lumber’s Senior Safety Specialist requires the successful candidate to assess, implement, develop, and lead, all company safety compliance programs to include Operational (plant) Safety, OSHA Compliance Programs, Department of Transportation (DOT) Compliance Programs, and Ongoing Regulatory Compliance related to Health and Safety processes. The qualified candidate shall be seasoned to working in manufacturing environments and capable of supporting our greatest asset; our people.

Scope of Coverage:

The Senior Safety Specialist will be responsible for all matters of health and safety coverage assigned to four key areas. Three locations in Alabama (Huntsville / Madison / Tanner) and 1 facility located in Westmoreland, Tennessee.

The Senior Safety Specialist will be based out of the Huntsville, AL location.

This position requires < 40 % travel in support of our other locations based on needs and / or trends.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Lead all aspects of Health and Safety programs for the company.
  • Lead the site safety and accident investigation teams for each location.
  • Perform Job Safety Audits on personnel and equipment.
  • Perform Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) audits on employees based on job tasks.
  • Conduct risk assessments and recommend measures to mitigate workplace hazards.
  • Development of Job Safety Analyses (JSAs)
  • Provide solutions to alleviate risks and support our labor force.
  • Develop and distribute safety alerts, safety training, and capable of records retention (e.g. training rosters, OSHA required recordkeeping).
  • Develop and submit “flash” reports to management in a timely manner detailing incidents or property damage. Identifying root cause analyses and submitting recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Coach and mentor department managers, in the investigation of incidents to determine root cause and corrective action plans
  • Maintain current knowledge of Safety regulations and laws, accident prevention, hazards and other related topics
  • Ensure Department of Transportation (DOT) compliance
  • Collaborate with regulatory agencies, as necessary to ensure compliance.

 

Position Qualifications:

  • Excellent written / verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to travel regularly to all coverage areas of responsibilities.
  • Ability to multitask data across the company to identify trends and formulate mitigation planning.
  • Capable of formulating plans to submit to management that provide solutions for mitigating risk to personnel and plant operations.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing to the improvement of job safety, fostering connections with labor personnel, and actively promoting a positive safety culture.
  • Be established as a Health and Safety resource or possess the drive to become the subject matter expert (SME) for Health and Safety matters across the company.
  • Experience interacting with Occupational Health providers and treatment options.
  • Experience coordinating, developing, and delivering health and safety training modules to a variety roles and personnel.
  • Knowledge of state and federal safety statutes and compliance.
  • Computer Skills to include MS Office (e.g. PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Adobe, Outlook)
  • Experience with OSHA Recordkeeping and a safe Return to Work process for employees.
  • Experience with Behavioral Base Safety (BBS) and promoting a “zero incident” culture.
  • Capable of delivering health and safety briefings from team level to senior leadership to include safety industry alerts, recalls, and identifying risks.

 

 

 

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Safety or similar structured field (preferred but not required).
  • 10 years minimum direct role safety experience - preferably in manufacturing / assembly
  • First Aid / CPR / AED certified, preferred
  • Experience with OSHA and DOT regulations
  • Bilingual English / Spanish preferred
  • Experience with Worker’s Compensation Programs
  • Program Specific Knowledge:  Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Machine Guarding, Heat Stress, Emergency Action Plans (e.g. fire, inclement weather, violent intruder), Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Manual Material Handling, Overhead Crane, Forklift, Walking / Working Surfaces, Barricades, Hearing Protection,
  • Noise Sampling, Behavioral Based Safety (BBS), Signal/Flagman, Fire Protection, Hazard Communication (Haz-Com), Safety Data Sheets (SDS), Bloodborne Pathogens, Fall Protection.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in various climate conditions including extreme heat and cold environments
  • Walking, standing and sitting for long periods of time
