What are the responsibilities and job description for the WSD SUPPORT SERVICES IAs - Supports Grade 5 and High School Students position at Winooski School District?
The WSD is seeking three (3) Support Services Instructional Assistants to assist and supervise assigned special education students instructionally and behaviorally in the general education classroom(s), working with individuals, small groups and/or grade levels. One position is in the 5th grade at JFK Elementary and the other two positions are in the high school. Duties include (not an exhaustive list):
Adapt general classroom material/methods as appropriate to meet the needs of students, in consultation with the classroom and/or special education teacher.
Facilitate social and inclusive interactions among the student and his/her peers in the regular student environment.
Implement the program developed by the IEP team.
Participate in various community activities and field trips with students.
Assist in organizing instructional materials, under the direction of the classroom teacher or special educator.
Assist students as required with self-care and other health needs as identified by the student specific plan.
Implement instructional and behavioral programs for students, under the general direction of classroom and/or special education teachers. This includes working with students, both individually and in small groups, in a variety of academic areas and functional skills.
Implement and practice behavior management/modification plans and programs for and with students.
Assist and/or instruct students in functional skills, such as general behavior, dressing/undressing for outdoors,care of belongings, insertion and adjustment of hearing aids and use of other special equipment, and other areas as assigned.
Support assigned students with their classroom work in a variety of settings.
Supervising/supporting specific students during bus transportation.
The requirements listed below are typical of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Completed at least 2 years of study (defined as a minimum of 48 credit hours) at an institution of higher education; or
Obtained an associate's (or higher) degree; or
Met a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate through a formal State or local academic assessment:
i. Knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing reading, writing,
mathematics; and
ii. Knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing, reading readiness, writing
readiness, and mathematics readiness, as appropriate.
Knowledge of children with disabilities of special education students, and special education teaching methods preferred.
Ability to speak effectively.
Demonstrated broad knowledge of academic subject matter being taught to students desired.
Basic computer skills
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions.
Ability to communicate courteously, efficiently and effectively with a variety of individuals.
Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with peers, subordinates, supervisors, parents, and outside agencies.
Ability to show patience, respect and compassion in working with students.
Ability to effectively resolve conflicts and handle stress.
Experience working with children/adolescents.
35 Hours per Week - 181 Contracted Days
